Floor of nursery - rug over carpet advice

We’re in a rental and expecting a baby. We’d use my husbands office for the nursery. The carpet is however hideous, it’s very old and has weird white hairs sprouting out of it that make is feel dirty. We wondered if we put a rug over the top. We could buy a big rug (240x300) that almost covers the whole room but would that look weird with just having the edges show? Should we get a smaller rug instead?

I think a smaller rug would look fine! Although I don't think the carpet is that bad. It's certainly better than mine in our rental. We have really thin grey / almost black office carpet!
The white hairs are just part of the fibres , as they look to be synthetic. You could always hire a rug cleaner for a couple of days as another alternative x
