Famous grand designs "sad" project completed, back on the market for an eye watering 7.5m. Property is gorgeous but I would always fear it would crumble in the sea. Would you buy it if you had the money?

Lighthouse from 'saddest ever' Grand Designs is back on the market

Inside Chesil Cliff House: the anticipated 18-month project has taken 11 years to complete.

No I wouldn’t. I do think this was one of the best (wrong word - greatest? Saddest?) episodes and for me I think that building will always be a “white elephant” disaster.

Give0fecks · 14/08/2023 10:25

The little 30s (?) house that they knocked down was gorgeous too! Should have just kept that and put an extension on.

YakChewCrumbs · 14/08/2023 10:27

Nope. Bad vibes and vanity. That episode made me really sad and I wouldn't be able to shake it off. There's plenty of other houses with dramatic views if you have that kind of money.

KievLoverTwo · 14/08/2023 10:28

No. It's an eyesore that belongs in That's It I'm Architecture Shaming.

I hate buildings that are at complete odds with their surroundings.

TiredCatLady · 14/08/2023 10:30

Hell no - although the rate at which he’s dropping the price…

isthismylifenow · 14/08/2023 10:30

It just doesn't look right in this setting.

This is a modern house you would find in a hot country on their coast, hence all the big windows and the outdoor pool. When are these features going to be used in this setting... maybe a few months of the year? And heating this will cost a fortune surely.

It is a Hollywood looking house, not Devon.

lovewoola · 14/08/2023 10:31

Depends how rich I was as I love the area but couldn't move there so it would be a holiday home.

Mooserp · 14/08/2023 10:31

Too big and too close to the edge

Missanimosity · 14/08/2023 10:32

I agree with the bad vibe as well, love the views all around but the house that they knocked down...i watched in horror that episode thinking f.ck if I would gave that I would kiss the earth...rich people problems I guess
I wonder how much it costs to heat it up

My idea of house hell , concrete and glass , nothing cosy or comfortable about it.
I could never tire of a sea view but a caravan in that setting would make me happy.

Just had a look and it’s been reduced again (still without a full kitchen it seems too):

He would come with not much away as it took about 6m to build? I wonder if they are still in debt. Overall it just looks like a very bad move.

It’s too close to the edge otherwise yes.. it’s stunning

TiredCatLady · 14/08/2023 10:46

I seem to remember him saying he’d borrowed a huge amount to get it mostly finished but had left the kitchen and main bathroom unfinished.

It’s not been lived in at all and the council tax alone must be crippling.

tanstaafl · 14/08/2023 10:54

Expect we’ll be buying tickets from Omaze for it sooner or later !

isthismylifenow · 14/08/2023 10:59

I think I would divorce my husband because of this also.

Nice to see one solitary sun lounger has been added in these pictures. 😀

Persipan · 14/08/2023 11:12

I'm especially enjoying the way they're trying to make the lack of a kitchen or bathrooms into a selling point... Also, if I were spending upwards of six million quid on a house then bollocks to the idea of the annexe being sold to someone else.

mondaytosunday · 14/08/2023 11:31

No because I don't like it.
I saw the original episode and all the updates - the couple may well have split up anyway but his total obsession put his family through hell.
But that aside, I imagine there are structural supports in place to prevent what you are suggesting. But no - if I had that much money to spend on a house it would be a house in Chelsea.

I have been looking at the photos a bit too closely I think.😀

The bath in the computer image photo of the one bathroom, see how the bath is right by the door handle. It was most to be to be a sliding door, but imagine it was really designed like that. Paying 6.5 mil and having to squeeze past the bath to get the door open ....

Ha ha I was thinking that!

mast0650 · 14/08/2023 11:40

No it is a ridiculous, obscene monstrosity. Nobody should live in a house that big. And I like to be part of a community not stuck out in my own pseudo-castle.

GettingStuffed · 14/08/2023 11:49

I never liked it as it seems to be style over substance. IIRC it has been underpinned ( if that's the right term) so that if the cliff erodes the house will jut out over the ocean.

It's totally overpriced.

When they asked him if he regretted anything he said no because is finished. Dude basically chose a house over his s wife. Towards the end I'm not sure it was about project, sunken costs/investment and could not back out or his ego .

No I wouldn't buy it having seen the programme and all the problems and bad energy. I do think it's gorgeous, though.
