Everyone tells me I'm overpaying

In a couple of weeks, I have a handyman coming to do some work in my house. For context I live in London but the list of jobs is as follows:-

Removing brackets from the walls and filling.
Hanging pictures
Removing and painting mould damaged area in the bathroom
Repairing damaged flooring (in the living room, kitchen and dining area)
Painting and decorating an area which has been treated for damp.

The cost for all of this is £2,000 which I think seems reasonable given the amount of work required. What do other people think?

How many hours/days work is it?

KievLoverTwo · 11/08/2023 13:23

In an old house with walls that can be difficult to work with, fine. In a new build, not so much.

When was the last time these people telling you that you are overpaying actually got work done themselves?

GasPanic · 11/08/2023 13:40

There will always be people that tell you you are paying too much.

Bear in mind these are often people that do shoddy jobs themselves, employ people on low skills that aren't qualified and resent paying more that £2 an hour for anything. There is tremendous scope for bodging stuff in DIY and I see it on a regular basis.

It's always hard to tell how a job should be priced because "repairing damaged floor" could range from anything from a couple of hours polishing to several days sanding and repolishing a huge area. So not all jobs are equal.

It's also true to say in the modern environment actually getting someone to do a job is a challenge in itself.

If you are happy with the price and believe that a good job will be done, then to me that is all that matters.

How many hours of work is it? They seem like straight forward jobs. Most handymen where I am would charge by the hour. Have you had more than one quote - I find it's always best to get at least 3 quotes for stuff

im impressed you could get anyone to even quote to be honest! Gold dust!
