Is Greenwich overrated?

We found a gorgeous little two bedroom cottage in Greenwich for a steal at £2,500 a month. We currently live in Central London and pay that for a bog standard one bedroom flat.

Lots and lots of young professionals seem to be moving out to Greenwich. We've visited. It's lovely. It is very busy. The commute wouldn't be horrendous. But is it overrated? It seems to be the 'in' place at the moment.

There is always the risk of bumping into Liz Truss or Kwasi Karteng.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/07/2023 19:30

No, it's completely underrated - best place I've ever lived (I've lived in 32 towns/cities Grin)

LaurieFairyCake · 30/07/2023 19:34

And a lot of the time it's not that busy - you just have to walk up through the park to Blackheath to get even more open space (if 260 acres of park isn't enough Grin)

Plus walking along the river to the dome and the Thames barrier is often quiet and really lovely

Masses of transport options too - I get the clipper (Uber now) up town all the time to go to work

Rainbowshit · 30/07/2023 19:35

I would also say it's underrated

Jyas · 30/07/2023 19:38

I love it

KievLoverTwo · 30/07/2023 20:04

No, I love it. Put on a Teflon jacket to fight your way through tourists tho.

LadyLapsang · 31/07/2023 11:17

Greenwich and Blackheath are lovely, but Greenwich has a high rate of violent crimes and muggings.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 31/07/2023 11:26

The downsides I can see are a) tourists b) there are nice and not-nice bits to it, esp away from the village and towards the car tunnel, where I wouldn't think paying £2.5k/month was a bargain. And schools are patchy according to friends, but it doesn't sound like that's where you're at. It is lovely though.

Nodramaatleasttoday · 31/07/2023 11:30

I don’t live there . I’m in a further north bit of London. But I think it’s a lovely place ( very frequent visitor) and I’d move there if I could afford the same sort of property I have now.

babygirl88 · 31/07/2023 11:48

Underrated. Ive lived here 3 years now and its the perfect mix of leafy and suburban but close enough to everything exciting and convenient. I live on a very quiet road but im 5 minutes from the o2/blackheath/greenwich park.

I lived in Greenwich a few years ago and loved it. I really miss it, although it was definitely looked down on by some of my friends north of the river.

If anything, I'd agree that it's underrated.

GoingGoingUp · 31/07/2023 12:25

Agree it is definitely underrated. One of the best places I’ve lived. Absolutely love it there. Surprisingly good transport links for SE London too.

But it does depends on whereabouts in Greenwich you mean, as towards the Blackwall tunnel and around North Greenwich are not as nice and a little isolated. Can you elaborate a little?

sawnotseen · 31/07/2023 12:26

It's fabulous!

GoingGoingUp · 31/07/2023 12:26

That said, nightmare if you’re a car driver. There’s only really two routes away from Greenwich and they’re often full of traffic.

I am surprised by this - do you have any data? And is that for the borough of Greenwich or for the area people are talking about here, which sounds like around Greenwich Park/Greenwich station/the riverside and so on?

I lived in Greenwich until very recently. Phone snatchers on bikes has been a real issue for the past couple of years. There seem to be two gangs who operate, who cycle up and down the river path and around Greenwich itself snatching phones and bags, and they have been known to be violent at times. I had to adopt the mindset of never having my phone out when walking.

There’s also been several bike and moped thefts over the past year - only aware of them from the times police would swarm Greenwich running around looking for them.

LadyLapsang · 31/07/2023 13:01

I was surprised too until DC and a friend were mugged quite some time ago. Lots of different crime maps and statistics online, including the Met’s crime maps. If you live in London you can certainly see what is happening near you, updated monthly with a bit of time lag, including theft, sexual offences, vehicle damage etc.

LauraPausini · 31/07/2023 13:07

Greenwich is a fantastic place to live (particularly West Greenwich and the Deptford and Blackheath borders). It is well connected for SE London, has lots of open space and a relaxed vibe.

The traffic can be heavy if you need to drive, although most don't as the transport connections into the City / Canary Wharf are usually good.

Puppylucky · 31/07/2023 13:10

I have lived in Greenwich (West and East) twice over the past 10 years. It's beautiful and like living on a film set, in West Greenwich especially, but surprisingly limited in terms of nice pubs / restaurants etc- although the various events at the Naval College are great .I can also confirm it's got quite a high crime level for such a sleepy place . There was a shooting there last Summer and a murder on the high street a few years ago as well as various muggings etc. The Ibis hotel near the station is now housing asylum seekers who are fine in themselves but can feel a bit intimidating as they gather outside the hotel at night.

dreamingbohemian · 31/07/2023 13:12

I live nearby and agree some bits are better than others. The phone snatching bikes are a real thing but otherwise it's fairly safe. I wouldn't necessarily want to live in the centre-centre, it's heaving with tourists and students.

You could also look at Blackheath next door, it's not as trendy and transport not quite as good, but it's not touristy and the village is nice. It's more calm than Greenwich with lovely old houses.

Freetodowhatiwant · 31/07/2023 13:15

It’s beautiful!! And the most lovely place to live. I lived there for many years. Depending on budget the areas to look for are West Greenwich, Maze Hill, Westcombe Park, Blackheath and also Blackheath Standard. The area near there just into Charlton is also really good.

Vitriolinsanity · 31/07/2023 13:29

I totally love Greenwich and all the surrounding bits. I'm amazed anyone would think it's overrated.
