New sofas still very smelly after ten months…

We bought two new sofas from Sofology and they were delivered last September.

The problem is that they are still ‘off gassing,’ and still really smell. Every morning when I come downstairs it doesn’t smell very nice in the living room.

DP is a firefighter and so we’re not allowed to leave the living room door open overnight.

I’ve tried Febreeze etc but nothing works.

Help!

Can't guarantee it'll work for yourself, but after a microwave fault led to an enduring and nasty burnt plastic smell in our house, I used an atomiser with Neals Yard Organic Cleanse oil.

@Brewskii ha! I could've written this myself, my DP and I also have a smelly sofa from sofology 😅.

We use the automatic sprays that go off every half hour, leave the window on the latch and we have a dog so I cover the sofa in blankets and wash them weekly and it seems to do the trick x

@Brewskii meant to say my DP is also a FF 😅

That sounds awful, and can’t be right surely. Have you complained? I would want the sofas replaced. We had a very poor quality sofa delivered from Furniture Village, absolutely nothing like the quality displayed of the same model in the showroom, thank goodness we had taken out the finance option, the finance company, we’re excellent and helped us come to an agreement we re-selected and bought a two G Plan sofas, British made, still perfect after 7 years. Good luck OP.

Can you stick them in the garden for a day when the weather is nice?

Ask a silly question but was has being a firefighter got to do with doors? I've never closed a living room door in my life, mostly I've had open plan houses. (We do have a properly installed fire alarm system on all floors though, not stand alone smoke detectors)

Presumably it's to slow the spread of fire if one started in the living room.

All downstairs doors have to be closed before we retire for the night.

That said, I think I will just need to work on him regarding airing the living room!

Hi, I know this is an old thread but I've just joined MN to let you know that we've had the same issue with a Sofology sofa- came across your thread as I was researching. It's caused by the fire retardant coating, and when we eventually raised it with them (we too waited for the off-gassing to end), they said it was a known problem and they're replacing the full sofa for us. We're horrified we put up with it for so long (the smell makes me feel sick)- and they keep delaying when the new sofa was coming, but I'd recommend you get in touch with them ASAP and check if it's the same issue because it's never going to rectify itself if so.

My parents had this with a sofa from DFS - they spoke to customer services and they were able to change to a different sofa!

Hey, thanks for your message. We had so much trouble with sofology not even brought this up with them.. they took over 8 months to get our sofa to us. They said it would be ready in 4 weeks!

can I possibly use you as a reference to help us get ours sorted as I won’t be keeping my fingers crossed with them as it’s such bad service ..
