Another vote for Mumbles or Gower. Beautiful coastline, lots of countryside, good schools.

I live near Swanage. Nice town for little kids, hopeless for teenagers - and you end up as a taxi service as the public transport is very limited.
The nearest A&E is soon to be moved to the far side of Bournemouth - an hour's drive in the winter, much longer in the summer with the tourist traffic (there have been a lot of local protests/petitions about this)
The last bank in the town closed last year. 2 supermarkets - a small Co-op and Budgens. The Co-op shelves are often stripped of fresh produce - their ordering algorithms don't appear to have been programmed to take account of the local population increasing 5 fold during holidays and sunny weekends.
But it's a pretty place and friendly.

I’m currently visiting north Wales. Amazing scenery, good schools and beaches. Property is ridiculously cheap compared to SE England

Ogmore/Southerndown would be worth looking at rather than Barry if you're trying to avoid drugs!

How about this one?

That's pretty typical of back garden space for the area. It's a yard really. Bispham is typically fancier than Blackpool itself and houses are often twice the price.

Loving some of the silly eccentricities of that house though.

CB1988 · 22/07/2023 05:40

We can't avoid drugs. You know just don't want it severely drugged up 🤣

500k could stretch to 600k. And can be a doer uper. Gower and mumbles I think look great options..@QueefofSheena sounds lovely, any particular nice towns by the sea xx

Although in an idyllic setting, I think the primary school is a bit ropey in Charmouth. Been in and out of RI for a long time.

The roads around Charmouth are gridlocked all summer and Charmouth itself is awash with grockles every sunny weekend and school holiday. You'll pay captive tourist prices in the local grocery shops.

There are also very regular cliff falls. We saw one when DS was small and it really frightened me. After that I reminded DS what to do if he heard the noise of a cliff fall every time we went on the beach and the anxiety of it stopped me enjoying it quite so much. When the tide is in at Charmouth, there is not enough beach for you to get a safe distance away from the cliffs IMO, which limits the times you can be down there quite a bit. The beach also has a steep shelf which causes rips- I would never swim there.

Basically, I think there are better places to choose than Charmouth, despite it being one of my very favourite places in the world.

Another vote for Penarth

RockAndRollerskate · 22/07/2023 06:19

Penarth is lovely but you wouldn’t get as much for your money as Gower.
Lots of beaches and lovely little communities in Gower.

Penarth is a lovely town with great Primary schools. Definitely have a look on rightmove.

Another vote for Penarth. Beautiful town.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/07/2023 06:24

Another vote for Penarth. Primary and high schools. Big enough to allow teens some independence - train to Cardiff! Leisure centre!! Lovely big old Victorian housing stock.

cryinglaughing · 22/07/2023 06:28

Penarth is lovely but it's not a sandy beach.

AlwaysWantingIceLollies · 22/07/2023 06:48

Another Mumbles vote here

CB1988 · 22/07/2023 06:48

Ok so charmouth doesnt sound so appaing now @2reefsin30knots that must have been so frightening.

Penarth is ticking those boxes !!

Mumbles looks good too. Although a bit further away! But you have sand😆😆

Not sure if you were considering Pembrokeshire, but I wanted to say that attitudes can still be a bit 1950s down there. Fine if that works for you, but it didn't for my family!

CB1988 · 22/07/2023 06:52

@AlwaysWantingIceLollies any areas better than others in mumbles ?!

I mean it has potential but blimey needs a lot of work and money. I suspect the neighbouring house is flats as well which would put me off.

Lovemylittlebear · 22/07/2023 07:06

penarth
cowbridge
colwinston
llantwit major
porthcawl
mumbles (traffic can be a nightmare on that road in and out though if you need to get to places out of the mumbles in a rush)
gower (three cliffs, reynoldston, crofty, llanrhidian, llanmadoc etc all nice but a lot more remote then somewhere like Penarth or porthcawl - different vibe).

5minutesofquiet · 22/07/2023 07:06

That's a very busy road! One road in and out of mumbles.
