Lilac paint

It's time to decorate DD's room. She is 8, and so of course she wants purple. Her room is small but very sunny. The plan is for me to narrow down the colour choices to a few I am happy with, and then give her the final choice.

I'm normally a big fan of bold paintwork, but I think in DD's room, a vivid purple will just look too much, so I think I'm going to go for a shade of lilac, but I'm finding it very challenging! I'm wary of it coming out too blue or too grey, or too puce.

Has anyone used a shade of lilac they are happy with they could recommend (Dulux preferred, but any is fine really)? Or wants to try and and convince me I shouldn't be such a wuss and go bolder?

You need to look at Johnstones they have so many purple paint options and the quality of paint is also excellent.

Hi @FizzingWhizzbee they're not very well known for paint but Fired Earth do some lovely colours. I've just got a sample of this one chalk violet for my wardrobe doors and I really love it.

Or if you want something really subtle you could try great white which is a very subtle lilac grey which I have in my bedroom which has both north and south facing windows and is very sunny or calluna which is more of a proper lilac but still has plenty of grey in it so it's still not vivid.

My local Homebase colour match any colours from a colour card into Dulux paint if you prefer Dulux.

Thank you for the ideas! To clarify - I don't necessarily want subtle, and I definitely do want purple, nothing that reads as grey or blue.

I looked at Little Greene but couldn't see any purples at all - thanks for that link @Jongleterre! Wondering if I am brave enough!

I've got some samples on the way and when I get those painted up (on bits of paper I can tidy away because DD absolutely can't see them until I've got a shortlist!) I'll decide whether I think the room can take going bolder.

Could you just paint the bottom half of the wall, so you can be super bold but still have an airy feeling? Like this https://pin.it/2sB8JeG

F&B calluna is lovely, we've just done a bedroom in that

Friend's office at home is Dulux sugared lilac, deep purple sofabed and deep purple and yellow accessories. Beech floor and furniture. Sounds awfully clashing but she had someone in to do it, and it I was saying no, no it sounds awful - but actually now it's done it simply looks fabulous.

Whirlwindinacup · 15/07/2023 16:37

We've just used Crown Cloudburst and it's lilac with a bit of grey so subtle.

FizzingWhizzbee · 18/07/2023 14:03

Well, my samples have arrived, and Sugared Lilac is definitely a contender, @Ariela ! They were generally a bit paler than I expected so I've ordered some bolder shades to try too. It is amazing how the same colour can look so different on different walls though.

@dreamersdown I LOVE that idea, but unfortunately DD's room is fairly small and with her furniture you wouldn't see it.

Just a quick update, in the unlikely event that anyone cares - After many, many paint samples, DD and I have agreed on Dulux Sugared Lilac. Proper purple, but not too overwhelming. I think it should look good.
