Moving to Wells/Street

We're both active retired and wondered what life has to offer in the area.

Going down next week for a look around.

I think we need to live walking distance of shops etc, so although a village would be lovely, our time of life means a town is better.

We like walking, cycling, need a library and a lovely community.

any tips?

Watch the film Hot Fuzz before your visit.

I read that as moving to Wall Street!

Agree that you’re probably best in a town. Public transport is pretty appalling and it can take a lot longer to drive between places than you might think.

Wells is nice - decent market and some big supermarkets etc. Definitely prefer it for shopping.

Street/Glastonbury are definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. Again Glastonbury has a decent market but I find the high street is just tourist trap stuff with crystal shops and so on. Both have some nice cafes.

I’m sure you’re aware of this if you are going to buy in that area, a certain very large festival happens down the road and it will be exceptionally busy for a week or so a year and you may be able to hear it. Somehow some people move there and then complain about it but it brings a lot of money to the area and locals get options on e.g. Sunday tickets. Some people will go on holiday and rent out their property while it’s on - they make a tidy sum!

One thing I would look at, and I mean this in the nicest possible way, is the doctor/dental provision in the area. You’ve small community hospitals in Shepton and Glastonbury, but it was tough getting registered with a doctor’s surgery.

Otherwise, lovely walking nearby, some cracking pubs and your nearest big towns are Bristol, Bath and Frome. Nearest train station is Castle Cary.

😂 I didn’t know HF was filmed there, we have watched that film many times, when we visited DS’ knew straight away though. Wells is gorgeous, loved our trip there, also loved Cheddar. TBH I wasn’t keen on Glastonbury, which surprised me, I thought I would like it.
