Neighbours don't care... Garden disgusting full of dog poo

Live in detached house, next door neighbour who I never see and her older son garden is right next to ours.... We share a fence and you can see right into their garden from any of our windows upstairs. They Have large dogs.. Not sure how many as don't really see them maybe 3-4. Dogs arent a bother really... Bark occasionally but not excessively. Issue I have is the amount of dog poo all over their garden .... Its disgusting!!!! What can I do about it? They aren't approachable neighbours and don't want to create an issue. Am not talking 3/4 turds but around 40-50. I actually can't eat sometimes thinking about it... And when I open curtains upstairs first thing I see is the poo mountain

You don’t mention a smell. That’s your only grounds for complaint I’m afraid. I can see into both neighbours gardens but don’t look.

Beanscene · 07/07/2023 11:56

I am really a relaxed person.... And don't have an issue with the odd 1-2 turds but it's excessive!!!! Plus rest of the garden is overgrown etc.....

I can smell it sometimes but don't know if am imagining it if that makes sense...because I know it's there.

If you don’t want to address it with them as they aren’t approachable then there isn’t a lot you can do. RSPCA won’t be bothered that they aren’t cleaning up the poo as they ignore so many unscrupulous puppy farms. It’s a difficult one.

I can only imagine the flies and smell if there are that many and they must be treading in poo and taking it back into the house. 🫢

You may have to just go for it and knock and ask if everything is ok. Explain the amount of dog poo and wondered if they were all ok with not picking it up. But then you may get a backlash. Sorry…I don’t know what to suggest.

KievLoverTwo · 07/07/2023 11:59

You can't force someone to do their gardening.

Perhaps they have disabilities or are having a hard time of it and walking all those dogs isn't an option.

I don't really think you can do anything about it unless it's causing you an issue - vermin or fly infestations, for example.

You will have to discipline yourself to stop looking, and be thankful they are not four very yappy, annoying buggers.

SirChenjins · 07/07/2023 12:12

Unfortunately there isn’t anything you can do if it’s privately owned, apart from letting them know that the smell is atrocious and could you ask if they would clean it more often. Our (otherwise) lovely NDN used to do this with their dog on their front garden - several dog turds in varying stages of decomposition right beside our driveway, it was grim. I had a quiet word with her and she cleaned it up but I got the impression he was ticked off being ‘told’ what to do with his garden <shrug>. Some people are filthy buggers.

Blinkblank · 07/07/2023 12:16

Don’t look out of your upstairs window into their garden…. Problem solved.

Op hasn’t said the smell is atrocious, she’s not even sure she can smell it.

I know, but the neighbours don’t know that. I would have no hesitation in lying/embellishing the truth on this occasion - if they still don’t care after being told that then there’s really not much else she can do at this stage (unless she gets infestations that warrant environmental health).

Ylvamoon · 07/07/2023 12:23

🤔 we haven't had a dog poo thred in a while... 100% for originality to the OP.

Alsonification · 07/07/2023 12:28

I had this with previous neighbours. Nice people but terrible at cleaning up after their dogs. To be honest, I never cared about it really. Would never have even mentioned it to them, their garden, their problem & all that. Until, I saw rats in their garden. That's when I mentioned it to them.
I just sent a polite message saying I'd seen rats in the garden & the dog poo was obviously attracting them & since I didn't want them in my garden could they please take measures to sort it. I said if that wasn't possible I was happy to contact the council for their advice.
They didn't reply but the next day they cleaned it up & then cleaned it up on a monthly basis complete with power washing each time.
We were still perfectly friendly when we'd meet outside so all was fine.

Well if they can’t smell it they’ll know OP is lying?

Not necessarily - people are often oblivious to their own dog’s smells and/or get used to the stink.

Personally I find liars a nightmare to deal with, if I find someone out in a lie, I assume everything they say from then on to be a lie, unless it is proven right.

OP just needs to stop twitching curtains in one of her upstairs rooms and the problem is solved.

But you think a lie is better…..

Yes, nose blind.

It must be awful. Some people are disgusting. I dread our neighbours ever leaving as both are great and clean. The two across the road not so but I can't see their back gardens.

Looking out of your window is not curtain twitching. The neighbours are mingers.

But OP has stated that she’s not even convinced that she can smell it!

@SirChenjins just said she should lie!

God people can be disgusting can't they.

Christ you’ve got the whole road under surveillance, “nice and clean” is that you hyacinth?

Twiglets1 · 07/07/2023 13:10

I’ll pop round to clean it up shall I?

Oh no, there’s actually nothing anyone on Mumsnet can do.

Yogagrandmum · 07/07/2023 13:14

try Environmental health, it sounds disgusting

Bonniegirlie · 07/07/2023 13:15

If there is a smell from it you can contact the Environmental Health Department of your council and they should deal with it. Even possibly if it doesn’t, it’s still a potential health hazard.

Beanscene · 07/07/2023 13:18

@Twiglets1 ....ohhh would be great if you could 😉 would solve my problem 😜 am looking for advice really on how to approach it/or how people have dealt with it

caringcarer · 07/07/2023 13:19

Could you report to council on grounds of environmental health. You probably are not sure if you can smell it or not as you are so used to it. Try asking a friend to pop around and see if they can smell it.
