Delivery company couldn’t get the new bed upstairs!

It’s two separate divans that join to make a super king.
We have a return half way up the stairs and it wasn’t possible to get the divan base pass.

Apparently there are companies that take beds and sofas apart to get them into spaces and then re make them but it obviously invalidates the manufacturer warranty.

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations please?

Thanks in advance

What have they done with the bed now? Assuming they have taken it away, I would change the bed for a king sized one 🤷🏼‍♀️

Roselilly36 · 07/07/2023 06:50

I am assuming this is the first time you have had a ks bed in this property? I know someone who lives in a townhouse, stairs are very unusual, if they are having a new sofa that needs to go upto the first floor, they have the window taken out and the sofa winched up, no way would it go up the stairs otherwise. Would this be an option? What size bed do you have at the moment? Assuming that fitted up the stairs, could you replace like for like?

good luck, I hope you get it sorted out, it must have been really disappointing Flowers

unlikelychump · 07/07/2023 07:03

Can you do it yourselves?

As in,where the delivery guys too prissy with your walls etc? We got a sofa to our loft bedroom, we just gave the walls and banisters a go going over on the way by.

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 07/07/2023 07:08

Return the one you have purchased and buy one already split into 4 from bedfactorydirect - only way we were getting a new bed upstairs in our terrace.

When we moved in, we had to hoist our original bed through an upstairs bedroom window 😂😂

Same with the sofa - that's modular too

ItismeandIneedhelpplease · 07/07/2023 09:09

Thanks for the posts.
Company have taken the bed back for now while we decide what to do.

We have a super king now but it’s a slated bed that we put together in situ so we’ve not had this problem before.

I don’t think the guys were too prissy; they had padded protection and tried for quite a long time before accepting it would t go without taking out some wall plaster, knocking down the banister or putting a big hole in the ceiling.
We have stairs up to a loft extension which means the ceiling on the return is slightly lower 😏

If they really couldn’t do it then I think your only options may be a different style or size of bed. Will the company let you exchange it?

CatsOnTheChair · 07/07/2023 09:31

Brand new? Go for a different design that you can get up the stairs.
We have had a sofa cut in half - it wouldn't go into the new livingroom BUT we already owned it, and had been using it for the previous 4 years. So risking the upholsterer was £100 vs a new suite. I wouldn't have done it for something that could be returned for a (nearly) full refund.

@ItismeandIneedhelpplease Have you heard the song by Bernard Cribbins called Right Said Fred about moving furniture upstairs. Google it. Your post echoes the song

This. I had to do this and mine was just a double but I'd had the stairs moved and it was just too tight to get half a divan up there. The four split worked really well.

Ha, I had this with a ridiculous TV bed I bought, turns out the massive headboard was way too big to fit up the stairs. It wasn't even close.

I was determined to keep the bed though, in the end I spent ages carefully unpicking the upholstery and found a sort of natural break, so I cut it in half, took it up the stairs, and re-assembled it. I bought some more MDF and added a fuck ton of reinforcements along the join, plenty of glue and screws and it's stronger than it was before. Thankfully the upholstery mostly went back without and drama and covers up my butchery...

Laura23FE · 07/07/2023 17:16

we had the same problem, had to take out the bedroom window and take the bed through there 😂really want a new bed but cant be bothered having to pay someone to take the window out again

lucysnowe2 · 09/07/2023 16:44

We had this problem! Bed was already in two halves but still didn't fit on the stairs. Manufacturer took the bed away and cut it into quarters! ... sounds weird but it worked - when it was delivered it was just bolted back together again.

Exactly what I said at the time 😂

We aren't able to back the order and get a refund so instead we've decided to go for the option of using a company to do what Mooselaurels did. The company have been highly recommended and in the big scheme of things, it's not too pricey so fingers crossed.

Get a wooden bed that goes together once it's upstairs. We have a super king from oak furniture land. Headboard, end board, very sturdy wooden edges and boards.

No way would I go smaller to get a divan up the stairs.

Trixibella · 10/07/2023 09:44

base split into 4 or a sleigh bed which is just planks and goes anywhere.

We used a company that the retailer told us about (they couldn’t ’recommend’ them in case of any comeback) who take apart the base and remake it in situ

When said company arrived, they actually managed to get the whole bed upstairs just by taking all the packaging off. Which is exactly what I asked the original delivery guys to do but they’d refused, in case they damaged our wallpaper or glass banisters.

Good luck.

I ordered a ridiculously huge bed after redecorating my bedroom, and then realised to my dismay that there was absolutely no way the headboard portion would ever fit up the stairs.

But I really wanted the bed and in the end I decided to hell with the warranty and carefully dismantled it until I could peel back the covering. Eventually I got a sort of natural join in the MDF and was able to take it apart, get it upstairs, and put it back together with a lot of extra reinforcements to put the strength back in.

You'd never know it's been apart thankfully!

I was literally thinking the same thing. The only saving grace here is that I've used the same username so haven't outed one of my others haha.

Now I'm off to the Winchester to change my username until all this blows over...

Why do you need a divan? Can't you have a metal bedstead?
