What can we do with the area near my back door?

I need ideas to sort out this pillar. I've no idea if it's even supporting the roof - you can move it! But it looks terrible. The door is scratched like a bear lived here so I will need to fill it and then paint but not sure what colour?
I know there is a bit of wood work to fix above the pillar. Again once done what colour would you paint the wood work?

You could get it brick-veneered - also look up stone cladding and stone wrapping.

Then I’d find a suitable L- shape or corner planter and grow something up the column to soften it

I’d then focus on the wider area

• proper cast iron welly rack and a lovely cast iron outdoor shoe stand
• upgrade the ceiling light to something modern
• loads of plants

Thanks @BestServedChilled I think stone cladding would sort it. The wellies are there temporarily while I rearrange storage inside.

I agree more plants would be great.

Any thoughts on paint colours for the door or woodwork?

I’d paint the pillar, and put a nice pot there with a plant growing around and up it.

the cheapest option would be to wrap bendy plastic trellis around the pillar and grow a nice plant up it.
