Boiler cost London

Hi. Just had a quote for £5,000 to install new boiler in same place in London. Thirteen years ago we paid just under £3k from same place (for same brand boiler, same technical spec). Does this sound right? Thanks!

No it sounds like a lot to me. Significantly too much. I had mine replaced in London last summer. Somewhat to my surprise British Gas proved to be the best.
If you PM me I can maybe try to dig out some info if I can find it - am reluctant to post semi identifying info in public.

If a like for like replacement then no pipework is needed then it's very expensive. How much is the boiler without fitting (google the make and model and you'll see)? Also let us know because it didn't last very long so we can avoid!

Ask around for other heating engineer recommendations.

checked - ordered from British Gas last August.
Cost £2,780.
If you do want more info (there are slight complications) OP PM me and will be happy to answer any questions/fill you in.

I would say yes, expensive for a like for like replacement.

At least try BG amd Boxt.

They may not be the cheapest, but they will give you a baseline to see whether an independent is taking the piss (sometimes they will quote very high if they don't want the work).

Funny to hear people having good experiences with BG. I had to make a complaint about their sales guy being aggressive. It was scary. They were also a lot more expensive than a local co.

BeccaBean · 26/06/2023 20:48

Thanks All and @pendleflyer in particular for fishing our your BG costs. I'm surprised this firm doesn't want the business as they came to take a look at the boiler same day when we called them with the problem and we've used them for services for years and also for putting a new radiator in a couple of years ago. I've been recommending them to friends for ages! I'll call them about the quote and also get another couple of quotes (have a friend nearby who recommended another local independent and will call BG for the second).

I had a positive experience with them - their sales guy was really good and answered all sorts of tedious questions I had. But I think it may have been obvious to them that I had done a bit of homework and the hard sell wasn't really going to deliver.

Overall I got the impression that they knew their stuff (and the regs) a lot more that the independents I spoke to. I had no problems with getting certs and stuff afterwards and the system worked really well since. They are more expensive I think though.

Glad you had a good experience. I was heavily pregnant and the guy treated me like an idiot, and made me feel very unsafe. It was pre-covid and my husband was at work.

The quote was a lot more than anyone else as well, and he clearly didn't know what he was talking about (talking about putting scaffolding etc, quoting me for a different boiler to the one I asked for and telling me that we couldn't reuse our Nest and had to use whatever he was selling or it would be a lot extra. It was clear I knew what I wanted as I had talked it through with a recently retired gas engineer relative). Left a really bitter taste.

We ended up going with a local independent who we have used a number of times since.

Well I hope you complained.

Thing is with BG - you actually have someone to complain to, whereas an independent there isn't much recourse except threatening them with GasSafe if they omit to do the regs or do a dodgy install. I'd be surprised if GasSafe got involved with personal safety issues.

BG prices are higher than independents often, but I have seen some truly outrageous stuff from some independents when they didn't need/want the work. We are talking 3-4x the price even of BG !

Also there was another thread on here recently where the independent didn't register, so that is always a danger. A lot of independents are really shoddy when it comes to completing the paperwork (not just for boilers but building work in general). That won't be an issue with companies like BG and Boxt.

I just wish there was a BG equivalent for stuff like tiling and plastering. There is a massive lottery at the moment getting good trades in to do a job. I've heard some horrendous experiences from friends and family recently.

dreamersdown · 27/06/2023 09:40

No, we have just been quoted 4.1k to replace boiler but also remove two huge water tanks, upgrade from old system to combi and sort radiators etc. happy to recommend if you’re in NE London.

PuttingDownRoots · 27/06/2023 09:43

British Gas was twice the quote from B&Q for us... including £500 for scaffolding due to the boiler being above extension.

iwantavuvezela · 27/06/2023 09:47

paid in London £3557.00 at beginning of year - so your quote does sound high. Went with Homeserve

dotdotdotdash · 27/06/2023 09:49

I was quoted 3.5k to replace a boiler in same place and remove systems tanks - six months ago this was.
