Small home same school v larger home further away

Sorry for long title! I am on my own with 2 (8&12) children trying to buy my first home, we are living in a relatives home that is being sold so I'm feeling the pressure.

I am on a tight budget, I work PT as my youngest has additional need and trying to use a LIFT scheme. The houses near my children's school are expensive, the only property I've found is of non-standard construction and on a busy road.

Homes further away in the borders are cheaper and nicer and in the countryside, which is where I want to be. My youngest regularly talks about how he'd like to go to a different school, and he has struggled with he school for quite some time so I know he would move. But, my eldest would never talk to me again. He has a lovely set of friends and a football team he loves.

How do people decide what is best? My youngest son and I want wide open space, but I want my eldest to be happy of course.

I wouldn’t let my children dictate where I live . I would base the decision on what I thought was best for everyone .

@Fidgety31 But what would be a good place to live? A bit of a difficult question, but I live in a wonderful area, safe, clean, but a tad too lonely
