Shading a west facing patio from evening sun

Has anyone got an solutions please? We invested in a large tilting swivelling cantilever parasol and it is useless in the evening in our west facing patio. We were careful to get a tilting one but is actually a tilt to the side i guess we need rather than tilting on an angle. To get shade in the evening for dinner we would have to place it on the grass quite a distance away!

Any suggestions? We dont want anything permanant as sometimes we like evening sun when it’s not so hot. Are we missing something with the cantilever parasol? They get such good reviews and no mention of the difficulty we are facing!!!

Is it too heavy to move? Can you rotate it so that it tilts in the direction you want?

I confess I just move to where the shade is, rather than try to create shade in certain places.

We just have a normal parasol through the middle of the table (actually it's a Coca-Cola one and every time I see it, I feel like I'm on holiday 🍹).

We just move our table when the usual patio spot gets too hot (i.e. now!). It’s easier.

Thanks. We have tilted it (they only tilt uo and down rather than side to side) rotated it etc and when the sun is at it’s most intense on the patio in the evening the shade is basically on the house wall 😂😂🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤷!!!

Shade sail?

Get as big as you can fit

We use a big parasol, but it needs to be positioned a metre or two to the side of the table, not in the middle of it. We're also planning to build a pergola and grow nice climbers up it, but I know you didn't want permanent structures.

We might also look at attaching shade sail(s) to the pergola, but of course you can use them without. You will need suitable strong attachment points though, which might well need permanent fixings.

Thank you. We have managed to
find a solution for now: parasol on patio for
lumchtime sun. Small table with smaller tolting parasol on grass for evening sun (can be easily moved)
will look at sails
thanks so much
