What's Catterick Garrison like?

We are relocating from the south, with a primary-aged child, and looking at a house in a village near Catterick Garrison. What's it like to live here? We visited at the weekend and liked the retail park shopping, plus the proximity to Richmond for the market town and walks. Any advice about this area? Thanks

Absolutely gigantic barracks, the largest British Garrison in Europe in fact. From what I've heard, there are a lot of fights because there are so many soldiers. I wouldn't want to live there with kids.

However, Catterick is one of the more affordable areas of the country, but you should look at Catterick Village instead of Catterick Garrison. The Village is meant to be okay and I've seen a lot of reasonably priced housing there.

I live near there - may I PM you?

Unless you/partner are in the Army I would avoid. Plenty of other locations around that area that are nicer + closer to Richmond.

Bagofweasels · 12/06/2023 13:29

Which village? Some are nice around there, catterick garrison itself not so much!

kangeendroo · 12/06/2023 13:39

@FetchezLaVache yes that would be great thanks.

@Bagofweasels I'd rather not say which village, but it's approximately 5 miles away from Catterick Garrison. However, that would be one of our local places for shopping etc, so curious of any implications of being reasonably close to the garrison that we might not have considered.

I’d say Richmond or the villages surrounding it would be nicer than Catterick. People from Richmond go
to Catterick for the big Tesco and those sort of shops but that’s it really.

Bagofweasels · 12/06/2023 13:44

5 miles away should be fine! I am also about 5 miles away. It’s convenient for shopping, big tesco and an Aldi and a boots. I imagine it would be a grim place to live but handy enough for shops and things

@Springbuds38 @Bagofweasels great, thanks for the advice.

Its been a few years since we lived there but there's some gorgeous villages around there.

One thing to look at... hospitals! It took.ages to get to A&E for example in Northallerton (is that still the hospital or was it downgraded in the end?)

You adjust to the sounds of gunfire.

Lots of pretty villages around that area. The garrison itself is pretty grim (ex-army wife, lived there for a few years a while ago). Big Tesco was the highlight when we were there but I think the retail park has been expanded now. Richmond is lovely, and the wider Dales are beautiful. If you're just going into the garrison to shop then it's fine.
