Sash windows - D Handles yes or no?

Why do the d handles exist outside on sash windows? Do they have a true benefit? If you would upgrade your windows from single to double glazing (conservation area) - would you go for them again if they are on the old windows? No one else in the neighbourhood has them.

I believe the D handles are so you can pull the top section down more easily.

Is it considered to be very old fashioned to have them? Would you paint them white or keep them in their metal finish?

D handles on the outside? Never seen this before.

Some of our old windows had them, not all. I expect it was the ones that tended to stick. We haven’t put them on the new double glazed sashes as I wanted them uncluttered and the sashes move easily without needing them.

Thanks for the tips

Oh those Angel vent locks look brilliant! Wish I’d seen them a few years ago when we got our windows done. We have thumb locks and sash stoppers but these would be so much easier than having to find the key to undo the sash stoppers. And much quicker in a fire too.
