Lodging Needed

Wise MNers, my adult son has changed jobs and needs somewhere to live. His family must remain in their current home, at the moment, so he needs lodgings in Carlisle.
He's a health care professional on a 3 or 4 day shift pattern. At present he's AirBNB-ing it but this isn't sustainable.
Do any of you know where he can look for lodging?
Any help or advice would be welcome.

As a hcp does his employer have staff accommodation or is there key worker accommodation available locally to rent. Is he working in the NHS?

Openrent

Have a look for property guardian websites for that area. They aren't often focused on London, but they are also national.

He should look for a Monday to Thursday let on spareroom.co.uk.

If there aren't any being advertised, he should approach people with old adverts asking if they would consider Monday to Thursday (with the appropriate cut in income).

@KievLoverTwo if he's in a shift pattern it could be irregular days, not as simple as M-T.

Ah, then he needs a 7 day a week lodger setup. It will be attractive to landlords that he won't always be there 7 days a week, he should mention that when he contacts them. They get some time in the house to themselves whilst being paid.

Thank you all. I will pass all this on. I knew MNers would come to the rescue 😀

He's asked and has been told "no".

I'm a live in landlord and don't offer any discounts for Mon-Fri lodgers because

  • the costs don't go down noticeably when they're not here. The council tax, water, broadband, energy standing charge, heating, fridge freezer... All remain the same. There's a couple less showers and slightly less cooking, but not enough to make an appreciable difference in bills, but such lodgers usually want a significantly cheaper rent
  • I've got a separate guest room so I have no use for that room on the weekends
  • I often work weekends, and so there's no sense of 'having the house to myself', plus I prefer to increase the chances someone will be in so the dog has company.

If I were looking for a room I'd avoid the ones who are only seeking a M-F lodger. They are usually the ones who don't really want a lodger, but need one through sheer financial desperation, and will want to neither see nor hear their lodger.

Having just checked, there's 6 ads on Spareroom for rooms for men in Carlisle itself, so he's not going to have a vast amount of choice.

IBetGordonRamsey Thank you. I appreciate the insight 😀
