What outcome would you expect - new windows

First property and so first time getting double glazing done. Really disappointed by the results. The company has really good reviews on Google and Facebook but the finish is so poor.

All windows have dust inside what should be sealed unit. One window closes with a gap showing sunlight. The other windows have scratched chrome handles and squint end finishes on the window ledge. My biggest concerns is the dust inside the windows because I don't feel these should have left the factory - let alone be installed.

I've spoken to the owner who is sending back the original installers and could do with some guidance here. I'd say the windows are mostly fit (it's warmer and quieter) but I feel like asking for a full replacement on the windows. Any guidance from folk in the know very much appreciated.

Many thanks

eerr… no.. they’re crap.
male builder here - don’t know how I’ve ended up lurking. I’ve been checking out gossip on property values and it led me to a thread here… so here I am.

anyway those windows are crap. Hope you haven’t paid for them..

on a wider note sometimes I just wonder “where are your men”? How come he didn’t look at it and argue with the installers?

BlueMongoose · 22/05/2023 21:05

Is that sawdust stuff inside the glass? If so, that's appalling. The company which has been doing our windows over the last few years (and have done almost all the house now, one left to go, presently on order!) wouldn't have fitted those, they would have sent them right back. Once they came and found a sheet of glass for one window panel had been put in 'wrong side out' in the unit. ow they could tell I don;t know, but they only realised when they came to fit it, they fitted it and told us immediately they would be refitting one made 'right way out' as soon as they had had the appropriate Words with their suppliers and got a replacement pane made up, which they did. We'd never have noticed if they hadn't said anything.

Palmasailor · 22/05/2023 21:09

if That sawdust is between the glass panes, they all need replacing.

plus - you don’t want the original installers back. If they fucked it up the first time
then they can’t do it. So you need a different team.

the windows themselves are probably ok of fitted correctly but the original team will resent having to come back because they think they did it right the first time and they won’t get paid for the return.

sorting it - for them - will be an admission they loused it up the first time.

so it’s I’ll feeling all round.

have you paid? If so how much / have you paid all of what’s “due”?

Floralnomad · 22/05/2023 21:15

Just insist on having them replaced , they are awful .

CaptainJ · 22/05/2023 21:19

Thanks all for your comments so far - Paid the total cost 4k upfront because I trusted them (I'm a small business owner and its a tight knit city - didnt think anything could go wrong).

Ill be asking for a full replacement on all the sawdusty ones.

We’ll if you paid by credit card then you have some leverage.

otherwise - you say it’s a tight k it community - and so that’s also leverage.

they have - no mistake - loused it up - and so I suggest you get hold of the owner and tell him you want it sorted by another team.

all up front is unusual, and if they demanded that then that’s unusual as well. Indicates they have trouble getting paid / and that indicates they have trouble installing to a standard a reasonable person wants to pay for.

so there’s more here than meets the eye.

good luck!

Diyextension · 22/05/2023 21:41

Looks to me the dust is between the outside of the glass and the seal on the window . It just needs the glass unit removed and all the dust cleaned out properly.

Soapyspuds · 22/05/2023 21:49

I know it's too late but nobody should be paying the total cost up front. IMO companies only request this because they either have cash flow problems or generally do shit work and need to get the money before the customer sees the work.

Yep. I usually ask a bit up front, a bit day one when we start, and about half at the end.

CaptainJ · 22/05/2023 22:01

Hi Soapyspuds - thanks for the reply. The company didn't ask - I just did it for ease and because I felt there would be no issue with the end result (going be their reviews). I've asked the owner to come round instead of the installers and think they'll not be surprised by my request for full replacement. Just the inconvenience of it all! Many thanks.

We recently had all of ours replaced and none of them look like yours. I’d be asking for a replacement

@Palmasailor probably not the best idea to come on a female forum and be so openly sexist and condescending

Bearpawk · 22/05/2023 22:07

Op no get them to fix them. If they drag their feet tell them you have lots of photos and won't hesitate to post on all the website sites.
Companies such as this sometimes use sub contractors as fitters - I had the same experience with a well reviewed local flooring company - they sent a terrible fitter.

Bearpawk · 22/05/2023 22:07

*all the review sites not the website sites Confused

Well - where are they?

not that it matters really to be honest.

Diyextension · 22/05/2023 22:12

I think they just need a few hours adjusting them and cleaning/ finishing them off properly. Point out all the “snags “ to the owner and give him a chance to fix any issues you have . I had a few issues with the our windows when they were installed and the owners of the company came round and dealt with them personally.

Are women not able to argue with the installers ?

SD1978 · 22/05/2023 22:46

@Palmasailor ...... clearly all off at work whilst the timid wee woman stays at home and accepts shitty work, because their big strong man wasn't home at the time to deal with it........BiscuitHmm

Some epic trolling going on here today! Either that or someone's got issues.

Women do it all the time on here, including a comment saying ‘all men are dogs’.
Let’s not worry too much about it until the women can behave too 😆

Some women buy/own properties on their own - they buy them as single women, hasn't that possibility occurred to you?

I wasn’t trying to be facetious or troll… I just dropped in here because google sent me because it one of the few places with some threads about current property prices - which I’m trying to track and I’m just shocked at some of the poasts.

it’s not a “big strong man” thing or anything else - I would just deal with a lot of the crap that the women in here are dealing with. And I really did think “where are your men?”

that’s all..

my DW is in hysterics when I read out some of the stuff!

anyway I’m outta here - I’ll leave you girls to it.

CaptainJ · 23/05/2023 11:01

Thanks all for the replies. Had the owner up this morning and the snags rectified. Dust was trapped in the lining on the outside which has been cleaned, misalignment improved, and the scratched chrome was an protective film that had not been removed. Lesson here is - pay by credit card and don't pay in full in advance.

Thanks again.
