Moving house checklist and tips

So it looks like our house move is finally going to happen and a date of 16th June has been floated by the person at the top of the chain. Thankfully I'm only very PT working at present so should have time to organise everything for this if this date works for everyone but I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed at the thought of everything that might need done. So far my list comprises:

Contact removal companies for quotes which includes packing service
Make a list of things we will pre-pack such as a change of clothes each, kettle, important documents etc
Get boxes and pack the above items
Contact cattery for overnight stay
Mail redirect set up
Contact utilities companies, local council etc to inform them we are moving
Get in touch with potential new broadband provider to get a connection date

If anyone else has any useful suggestions or any handy tips to help it go more smoothly these would be very welcome!

Throw away your toilet brushes. You don’t want the packers packing them!

Or even leaving them for the new owners!!

Everything you mentioned OP is spot on - I would have a ruthless declutter too and if you haven’t used it in 12 months (unless sentimental) then there is a good chance you won’t use it again… get it gone!

I'd add buy/change locks on new house/ contact lock smith.
Also, research your new takeaway options to make ordering in after a hard day's moving easier.

Cleaning stuff, bin bags - just in case. A couple of house moves I have helped with the destination house was pretty grubby and it's a darn sight easier to clean before all your stuff arrives.

If you don't have a driveway but on-street parking you will need to cancel the bays for the removal vans.

I also have these on my list!

Update Amazon Address
Update Paypal Address
Update mobile provider address
Update Bank/ Credit Card Address
Change Car Insurance Address
Get quote for Buildings Insurance for new house
Get quote for Contents Insurance for new house
Apply for council tax for new house
Change TV Licence address
Change life insurance address
Change Address at Dentists
Find Doctor
Change address with employer
Change address with inland revenue

Good luck! You've got this!

Thank you everyone for your tips and suggestions, I've taken them all on board! We're staying in the same area so a bit less work in terms of GPs, takeaways etc (thankfully, as we have some good takeaways round here).

Make sure important documents, kettle, teabags, some cereal bars/other easy snacks, Hoover, cleaning products and cloths all travel with you and not the movers. Both times we’ve moved the kitchen cupboards have been gross and it’s easier to clean them before you unpack your things.

Check your new bin days if it’s changed and add a reminder to your phone for putting the bins out on the right days.

Label your boxes for the room you want them in in the new place. Don’t just write the room on them, include contents so when you suddenly need an extension cable/baking tray/whatever you don’t have to look through loads of boxes.

Our moving company did wardrobe boxes, these were so quick and easy to use as you just move everything on its hangers into the box, then back out into the wardrobe at the other end, so check if yours does.
