Box room

Does anyone have any inspiration or advice on organising a box room. It is measuring according to my old Rightmove details as 2.87m X 1.99m but I know that is measuring into the built in cupboard over the box. It's tiny. Unfortunately can't extend and need it for my 4 year old. Currently have a single bed in the gap between the cupboard and the wall, there isn't a lot of space for anything else. Has anyone built a bed with storage above the box? This would obviously be with taking the cupboard out. I've attached the old Rightmove picture as well.

Is there room for a bed across in front of the window?

It is wide enough for a bed literally wedged in the gap. We moved the radiator from under the window for this posibility but it's a huge window so takes up most of that wall anyway.

Get a bed with built under drawers for clothes and put under window. Shelving unit for toys between bed and cupboard.

We have similar. Pinterest is your friend, there are lots of examples of building over the bulkhead. We stripped the cupboard out and boxed in the bulkhead making it smaller and the bed sat on it (with support on the wall too). Will find a Pinterest example.

We have this bed from IKEA in our box room which fits lots in: www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/slaekt-bed-frame-w-storage-slatted-bedbase-white-s29291956/

We've also got a set of Nordli drawers from IKEA which creates some small world / lego play space on top, as well as a wall mounted bookshelf.

You can get small floating bedside tables too for lamps etc., which frees up floor space.

That would just fit in the box room that I am struggling with, against the far wall, I think! (Like @ThatDreamSheep's it is 1.99.)

So thank you.

What is next to the box room? We moved a wall across from the largest bedroom to the box to allow more space and you'd never know it was done now.

4 might be too young, but what about a bunk with a desk/storage underneath?

Friends had a triangular box room and made a bed to fit the space! Lots of quirky ideas on pinterest.

There was a box room thread in the last two weeks under Property so worth finding it as lots of posters showed their own box rooms and gave tips for layouts. Will see if I can find the thread.

Can I ask @CC4712 was it expensive to do? This is my preferred plan for our box room, but I have no idea what I'm looking at cost wise.

TBH-I have no idea what it cost, as it was 10yrs ago with the help of a builder relative. It meant that legally, the box room could then be used by an adult based on the m2- if we ever rented or sold the property- so some of the cost is negated by that benefit and worth thinking about.

This is for HMO's, but gives you an idea:
One occupant under the age of 10yrs 4.64 m2
One occupant 10 years or over 6.51 m2
Two occupants 10.21m2

whereeverilaymycat · 17/05/2023 09:59

@CC4712 thank you. To be honest it's going to be so much cheaper than the loft conversion (my first choice) that it'll be worth it.
Following this thread with interest as in the meantime we need to make our tiny room work better!

Africa2go · 17/05/2023 10:01

@whereeverilaymycat if you're in a typpical 30s house, the wall between the front bedroom and the box room is likely to be a supporting wall meaning you'll need an RSJ etc.

whereeverilaymycat · 17/05/2023 10:16

@Africa2go it's 50's but that's a good point as I guess it still could be. I'll bear that in mind, we will get a professional in anyway so no risk of us causing an issue!

BungalowBuyer · 17/05/2023 10:18

We have a similar box room, on the corner of the house so two outside walls, be really careful about ventilation.

If you're squeezing a bed across the windows, put something between the bed and the window wall to maintain a gap and get a bed frame not a divan so there's air circulation underneath.

CC4712 · 17/05/2023 14:19

This is another option if its 2 kids rooms next to each other.

That's a clever use of space, @CC4712

We're doing this. Room at top of image. The right is currently 2m square and we're stealing 0.5m from the Room on the left. It'll be about 2k Inc plastering, supporting beam etc and labour. NW.

What about a shorty bed in the meantime? Narrower and shorter. I have this in my box room for dd. It allowed for better movement around the room.

WestOfWestminster · 17/05/2023 21:17

I agree with the poster who said about the ikea bed with drawers underneath and stick in front of the window

whereeverilaymycat · 17/05/2023 21:25

@Freshair1 amazingly helpful thank you! That's better than I thought.

This is my ideal plan but not an option for a couple of years for us cost wise so thinking of things for the time being. Glad to know other people have done this and it's worked though!
