How easy is it to change this light?

I have a ceiling light like the attached photo. If I want to change it to this IKEA one (which is a lot smaller, and maybe the wiring works differently, I don't know), how hard is it?

I know someone quite competent with this stuff but don't want to ask if it's a big job. Does it need an electrician? Does the bit underneath usually need skimmed or anything?

There should be standard wiring in there, but unless you know what you are doing you should have an electrician swap them out. If you are going to attempt it, always turn off the power to the room via the flipping the fuse in your electrics box. Usually they will be labelled “living room”, “kitchen & utility”

Whether the newly exposed bit of ceiling will need touching up depends on how many times it’s already been touched up since your current light fitting was installed. The easiest may be to simply repaint the entire ceiling when the electrician is done. That you can safely do yourself.

Thank you. It wouldn't be me doing it either way, but the person I know is pretty good with electrics and has done wall lights and things before. I just didn't want to ask if this is something that'll take hours! If it's a big job, I'd have to pay out for an electrician.

They’ll be fine then if they’ve done wall lights. Piece of cake.

It should be fine, OP.
I've changed several ceiling lights myself. The worst that can happen is that someone was a bit careless when the hole was drilled for the original ceiling rose and so it might need a bit of filler, but that's very unlikely.
Another scenario is that the ceiling was artexed and then skimmed over, but any relatively competent person would be able to smooth it.

Perfect, thanks!
