Petition: Introduce statutory licensing and regulation of builders

There are few options for people to seek redress for poor workmanship by builders and it is too easy for builders to avoid liabilities by liquidating one company and starting another. An increase in people claiming to be competent builders with the onl...

I’ve signed it. Considering the money spent in these situations there is very little in terms of a safety net - trades can and do get away with terrible shoddy work. Yet if I buy something for a tenner in a high street shop or from Amazon I do have redress and easily used consumer rights.

Signed. A few years ago my ex bought a house with inheritance money that needed stripping down to bare brick and floor boards, full rewire, new heating system etc. The whole works.

We got multiple quotes from multiple trades, and still ended up have to sack the first lot of builders. Constantly asking for more money, not turning up, incredibly shoddy work.

It cost thousands extra to put it right, and the house still isn't fully renovated four years later as the money just wasn't there anymore after having to put right fuck up after fuck up.

We spoke to multiple organisations and they all said go the small claims court. But the company had already dissolved, name changed and there was little to nothing we could do except warn as many people as possible that these men were cowboys who didn't have a clue what they were doing

Thanks so much for signing keep sharing with friends/ family coworkers etc any local forums. It’s from a cowboy builder site. Far too many people having to resort to expensive legal action and then not getting anything as the LTD renames itself or closes and starts under new name.

Signed. Lost faith in tradesmen. I'm dreading to yet find another one (the third round) to fix the leaks on our roof.

Not mentioning the less than four years old paint on all walls is falling apart everyday. We suspected the decorator diluted the prime paint plus didn't leave dry properly before second coats.

There's no protection. Online reviews these days have more scams/fakes than truth. Even recommendation by known people can't guarantee, as the tradesmen do get greedy and compromised their quality when they get more jobs!

Scousefab · 09/05/2023 19:40

It’s so upsetting reading more people suffering by poor standards and it makes you doubt yourself by their manipulative ways! Really hope you get your jobs sorted. You are right unfortunately I found out google and trust pilot are removing genuine reviews too!

Signed - thank you for this.
We have had the most horrendous experience and out of pocket by hundreds of thousands of pounds. There are so many cowboys out there and the system allows them to get away with it unfortunately.

QueenCamilla · 10/05/2023 23:25

Signed.
The situation with builders out there is absolutely awful. There seem to be more scammers around at the moment than legitimate workers.

The industry themselves should lobby for licensing - I've heard that legitimate companies struggle to expand due to a poor availability of reliable and capable workers. The licensing would help them to "vet" too.

I completely don't understand how the current lack of regulation benefits anybody (apart from the abundant criminals).
Someone, somewhere always benefits from the system (or lack of) that they've created. I'm perplexed about this one though.
