How to remove peeling paint from exterior door frame

I bought a house last year and have been putting off this job ever since because I don't know where to start! It looks awful though so I need to do it.

There's loads of badly flaking paint on the external door frame and I don't know how to remove it. I've sanded it this morning which has got rid of some of it but there's still loads.

Do I need to use paint stripper? Or is sanding it the best option? I've never done this before.

I've attached a photo of it from before I started sanding. It's not much better now though.

Heatgun, then fill any holes/cracks, then rough sand, then medium fine sand, then fine sand, then undercoat, then paint, 2 coats min!

Heat gun is a lot easier and less messy/expensive than paint stripper. If you’re using it near glazing then put a bit of wood or something in between to protect the glass from cracking.

Thanks! I'm off to b and q now to get a heat gun.

This.
It's a lot of work but it's worth it.

I'm starting to think I might pay someone to do it 😂.

It's the principle though, this is the first house I've owned by myself and I want to be able to do these types of jobs!

It's not difficult but it's very time consuming job.

You will see it, admire it and be proud of it every time you walk past it! Listen to a podcast or music and tae your time.

How old is the house? Just to mention, should test it for lead paint first - can buy kits on Amazon. We had lead paint on the frame and door, and paid someone to safely strip it. They had to use a special lead peeling kit and then a heat gun on a low setting

Brass wire wheel in a power drill.
