Sunken toilet

I was having a nosy on RM and came across a house with a sunken toilet . I've never seen this before.

Just wondered if anyone has had one, why this would be a preferred method of toilet ring and the practicalities of squatting and then walking to the corner to wash your hands .

Never mind they want near enough £1m for it www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/134200373

It's squat toilet - common in many asian and middle eastern countries, generally viewed as a healthier way to go as it maintains muscle tone and helps ease things though (IYSWIM). You can see there is also a "bum gun" on the wall so you can use water rather than toilet roll to clean yourself.

They are quite usual in lots countries, and actually ensure you are in a much better position for toileting. Our toilets are pretty poorly designed in reality.

I wouldn't say the price is particularly unusual for the area.

Yes it's supposed to be a lot better for the body to "go" in a squatting position. Common in lots of countries but we in the UK are just not used to seeing it much.

Pootles34 · 28/04/2023 10:03

Yeah it's really common in some parts of the world - we have a lot of international students at the uni I work at, it's quite common to see footprints on the loo seats!

It's pretty common in many Asian countries. As others have said, it's supposed to be healthier. An office building I used to work in actually had "Eastern style" toilets on one floor, as the company had a lot of Middle Eastern clients who preferred this and would come over to work with us on projects.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the practicalities of squatting and then walking to the corner to wash your hands" though. You do your business, clean your bum and then stand up and walk to the basin to wash your hands, just the same as in any conventional UK setup!

Thanks for educating me. I'm nog flexible enough to squat and get up. Respect the health benefit too

OP you can buy squatting stools that help elevate your legs so you are in a better position on a generic UK toilet. (Amazon sell them.)
