Hi After some MN wisdom!

Are these online firms from e.g. Compare the Market any good?

they are just £100s cheaper than local firms to me.

Too good to be true?

Don't do it!
My DS bought his first house in 2020 and opted for the cheapest quote online. A firm in Newcastle 150 miles away.
They were utterly appalling, he had no clue how bad as had no experience. The person dealing with his case left, then another, then another. None of these were actually solicitors. I won't bore you with the finer details leading up to completion but I went through it afterwards and found glaring errors. Took me (acting for my son) 18 months to get them to admit to the errors.

Find a local, long established firm and pay a bit more.

We have experience of both online and local. We were tied into using the EA conveyencer for our sale (long story) but had read some
awful reviews so when we found a house to buy we instructed a local solicitor to deal with our purchase.
the online solicitor was miles away but very quick to reply to emails and pretty efficient. It was a solicitor we dealt with rather than just a case handler that you sometimes get allocated with large online conveyencing firms.
on the other hand it was handy having a local firm particularly as we had some paperwork that was delayed and went missing during the postal strikes

We used an online form for our purchase and sale. Our sale went through fine, but our purchase was a nightmare, they stopped answering their phones as they had such a backlog, and we called every day almost losing our house. I eventually solved it by finding a friend of a friend on LinkedIn who was doing some consulting for them, and within 24 hours after months of nothing things started moving again. But if we ever did it again, I'd want somewhere I could actually visit.
