Advice about Castle, Northwich

We currently live in a 3 bed terrace in Altrincham and have been house hunting for some time but struggling to find anywhere with enough space for our budget (around £600k). We started to look in Northwich and have seen an amazing property in the Castle area (specifically on Queensgate).
Does anyone know this area? Is it considered undesirable? Would it be a good place to live with children (7 & 2 years)? Any advice/thoughts very gratefully received!

I mean it's not awful but it's certainly not that desirable. Would moving further our into Hartford or one for he villages like Weaverham work for you?

For a budget of 600k look at Hartford , kingsmead , Cuddington.

ManchNic · 13/04/2023 13:48

Thank you both. We have looked in Hartford but we only get a bit more than we'd get in Altrincham. And it's not that we especially want to move that far, as my daughter is still in school here, but it's just this particular house would be our dream house. But I don't want to move to an area that is unsafe or just not very nice. Classic house vs location dilemma 😩

Definitely one of the rougher parts of Northwich and lots of traffic down the main road which you wouldn't be far from so I'd worry about air quality.

Hartford is a great place to raise children though, although not sure how it compares to Altrincham

I can totally see the drawer of the house, it's a beauty!
Other than period house has detached, what's really important about where you live?

Where do you have to be close to for work etc?

NisekoWhistler · 13/04/2023 19:47

There is a beautiful house in Whitley for that kind of money, but unsure if you'd consider a small village

ManchNic · 13/04/2023 23:42

@NisekoWhistler we'd actually like a village location, it's just my daughter is in year 3 at a school in Bowdon and really doesn't want to move. I work in Sale. It's knowing that Altrincham is a nice area, good schools and secondary grammar options, easy access to shops, transport etc, but our main tie is my daughter's school and the commute there and back each day.
Which is the house in Whitley? We were due to see a beautiful one in Lower Whitley but it sold before we viewed it 😫
Do you live in that area?

It's not rough per say. It's a lot less rough than the less desirable parts of Altrincham to be honest. If it's the dream house have a look I'd definitely say it's very very overpriced , you would need to do a lot of work on it and you wouldn't get that much back for a number of years . I'd wait for it to reduce the highest price that has sold on that street was 375k in 2021. Don't get sucked in because it seems cheap compared to Altrincham make sure you negotiate. I'd say it's more worth 475-500 because of the size and plot definitely not 600 because of the road.

ManchNic · 14/04/2023 00:49

Thank you, that's actually very helpful as I hadn't considered looking at other house prices on the street etc.
When you say the less desirable parts of Alty, where are you thinking, just so I have an idea for comparison? Broadheath? West Timperley? Baguley?

Broadheath/Oldfield brow it's definitely no where as rough as there castle is all privately owned I don't think there's HA housing. I have a rental in castle and I used to live there in a Victorian terrace , I've never had an issue. I wouldn't pay 600k in castle because of the resale you would struggle to recoup it back especially if you do renovation work. There's period semis/detached that come on Chester road that are big the greenbank end are cheaper than the Hartford bit. I'd say if you wanted to sell you are more likely to recoup your money on Chester road.

Quite a few properties for sale around Whitley.

Gorgeous village. Amazing primary school. Just move schools!
