When to get a survey done

We have had an offer accepted on what will (hopefully) be our first home. We have instructed a solicitor and we are meeting with our mortgage broker next week to get a mortgage application submitted.

When do you arrange the survey? Should we wait for our mortgage offer to come back first or do it now?

Thank you :)

Usually you would do it straight away, arranging the survey shows the vendor that you are serious about the property.

Presumably you have an agreement in principle though?

It would be quite unusual to have an offer accepted without any sort of proof of funds.

I absolutely don't mean to sound nit-picky - we are in the process of buying in the UK having lived abroad for many years so it's a very steep learning curve for us.

I got my survey done before the full mortgage offer, because sometimes you have to renegotiate on price so need to be sure how much to ask the mortgage company for. And occasionally it turns out that the sale is completely off if there are major issues and it saved wasting money on the mortgage application. I would recommend getting the survey asap and considering holding off your full mortgage offer (as with the other poster Im presuming you already have a decision in principle)

My personal order of doing things:

  1. Put in the mortgage application
  2. Wait for chain to be complete (actually only about a week)
  3. (While still waiting for mortgage offer) Get survey and give solicitor go ahead for searches

I didn't want to incur costs before the chain was complete as if my vendors failed to find anywhere etc I'd be out of pocket.

I didn't have any worry about whether I'd get a mortgage so saw no reason to wait for the offer before ploughing on with everything.

Thanks all! Yes MIP sorted before we started looking at houses. Just need a meeting with the mortgage broker again before an application is actually submitted.
We will get going on the survey ASAP after Easter then.
FTB so it's all new!

How exciting! I am also a ftb and doing the whole lot alone, so quite a steep learning curve.
I got the survey done after the offer had been accepted and substantiated and we had all instructed solicitors.
The survey brought up a few questions for my solicitor to ask/note via the searches, and a few things for me to bring up (e.g where are the window keys?!)
Be prepared for the mortgage offer to take a little while. Mine was fairly straightforward, but still needed lots of checks on my accounts etc.
Now waiting for conveyancing searches to come back. 🙂

Do you mean mortgage survey or home buyers survey ?

If it's mortgage it will be arranged via your lender but home buyers survey should be arranged by yourself as soon as possible.
