raising doorframes of a victorian house

We viewed a house we fell in love with today but the problem is the doorframes upstairs are too short, my 6' 2" husband and 6' 4" son were having to bend to go through every one, so of course they can't live like that, but does anyone know if this is a relatively easy fix to make? House is not listed....

It’s a straightforward job they will just need the wall above them removing and new lintels in higher up . New door frames, doors, architraves, plastering, decorating…… it’s not a big job ,but the costs might be quite high.

A standard door is 6ft 6ins. I’m surprised they are so much shorter in a Victorian house. As they often had high ceilings, doors were often quite tall and generously proportioned. Have the doors been changed? @Citygirlrurallife

The doors in my victorian semi are just 6ft. In heels I hit my head 😆

@TizerorFizz i have a Victorian house with small doors but high ceilings. Every house in the terrace is the same so I don't think it's that unusual!

I’ve lived in Victorian houses with higher ceilings and taller doors! I guess maybe the cottages are smaller?

BigFloppa · 06/04/2023 23:55

I would imagine so as they weren't built to be grand just functional!

It’s a very high ceilinged, detached, full bay windowed house otherwise. Just low door frames !

In that case, taller doors would look great. Go for it.
