Ceiling mounted cooker extractor fan

Does anyone have a freestanding extractor for their cooker? Our cooker is on an island, so the extractor is ceiling-mounted and isn’t plumbed into the wall. The last owners put in a ceiling-hung extractor, which doesn’t seem to do anything, so the kitchen gets super smoky and smells linger. Like an older version of This

Based on when they put the kitchen in, I’m assuming it’s 10-12yrs old. I’m wondering if the technology has come on then and you can now get decent freestanding extractors. Does anyone have one they’d recommend?

Barett island extractor hood

The Klarstein Barett island hood brings glamour to the kitchen and frees the air from steam, grease and odours with a 558 m³/h air flow in three stages. It hangs freely from the ceiling on tear-resistant steel cables - perfect for large spaces in an Am...

We got a job with an extractor fan built in for our kitchen island. It's fantastic.

LookUponMyWorks · 03/04/2023 16:04

And by job, I of course mean hob!

Marchflower · 03/04/2023 16:10

Thanks @LookUponMyWorks - I’d wondered if they were any good. We have inherited quite a good induction hob, so ideally would keep that. Also not sure how a built in would work with cupboards but could look into that

We had an Elica one, it did have some issues initially but they did repair it. Ours vented out as the space in the ceiling allowed for a path to the outside wall, but you can get them that recirculate.

I do have a ceiling mounted extractor over an island , but the piping for it was already on the ceiling, so we didn’t have to do ceiling modifications for it.

TizerorFizz · 03/04/2023 16:28

A ceiling mounted one is very high. Lots of scope for smells to permeate before they get anywhere near the extractor. I’ve an island mounted hob with no extractor! High beamed ceiling and it’s perfectly ok. If you want an extractor, duct it. Recirculating does limit how effective it is. Miles above the job will limit it too. Just won’t have enough grunt and will inevitably be noisy.

Anyonebut · 03/04/2023 16:52

Oh, maybe mine is not really ceiling mounted, the ducts go up to the ceiling, but the extractor sits at normal height, something like this

We got a flush ceiling mounted extractor because I wanted one that didn't hang down and extracted externally.

we've got one from that range of extractor. Does the job well - and it's powerful enough to suck up steam and cooking vapours.
