Is this an ex-council house?

I don't know how to identify them? Just came across it on RM, within budget (expensive!), I dislike the look of it outside but it's gorgeous inside, very spacious, newly refurbished, a lot of light. Am I just being a snob or is this not a desirable looking house? I am not from the UK and am quite set on a Victorian terraced with bay-windows as my "dream home" (first time buyer), however I came across a few of these and they seem much more beautiful inside.

No it looks like standard 1960s housing stock

Construction will likely be cross wall though - so under that white cladding at first floor level is likely just timber frame and (maybe) insulation. It's not classed as non standard construction though so nothing to worry about there. Very warm houses due to the window size

80sMum · 03/04/2023 18:17

It could have been a council house when first built, yes. It looks very similar to other ex-council houses I've seen.

My own first house was built as a council house, in 1970, and that one looks to be from the same era, I would guess it was built in the mid 70s.

It looks nice. Surely it doesn't really matter whether it used to be a council house or not? What matters is whether you like it and whether it's within budget.

@TizerorFizz whoops, that was meant as a reply as @TheLightSideOfTheMoon not sure why it didn’t show up as I definitely clicked reply! I meant the OP said ex council in the title.

Nellieinthebarn · 03/04/2023 20:10

I had a 70s ex-council house that was a very similar red brick version of this. It was in a close, made up of three terraces. It was a nice house, it had a big kitchen diner, and a through lounge. Loads of built in storage. I loved it.

TizerorFizz · 03/04/2023 21:02

Where I live there’s little closes with say 10 Council built homes or a row for older ones, 1920s. Not a single one is not sold off. None is housing association either. All are desirable snd some have a lovely outlook.

DogLover20 · 03/04/2023 21:03

To all those that insulted me in this thread… when have I said I disliked being in an ex council house? I was just asking a question, I know there are a lot of advantages to ex council. I was curious to understand what “type” of house this was. No I don’t have to live outside of it but yes I do like the idea of buying a house I find pretty or at least to my taste on the outside too.

Talk about fucking snobbery

Why, what have I said that is so snob? The fact that if I spend more than half a million on a house I’d like it to look at least a bit pretty on the outside?

I imagine she wants a little bit of brag to the people in her home country.

Your comment is rude and stupid.

The original parquet floor and 69s banisters are to die for...I miss my 60s house....

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 03/04/2023 21:08

Sorry 60s bannisters!!!!!

MathsNervous · 03/04/2023 21:16

Yes I have seen ex-MOD housing stock very similar in design to this property.

TizerorFizz · 03/04/2023 21:23

@MathsNervous Where? Curious. Around the RAF site here it’s nothing like that house.

A brag about what exactly?

ShowOfHands · 03/04/2023 21:53

I live in an ex council house. It's early 1930s, big rooms, original quarry stone flooring, picture rails, curved interior walls, art deco fireplaces. It's one of two semis between two C19th farmhouses and looks over fields.

It's really rather lovely.

Wants to be able to say "i live in a victorian period property" rather than "i live in an ex council house" doesn't quite have the same ring to it when telling the folks back home (regardless of how nice the ex council house maybe).

What’s the meme about the cunt farm gate being left open?

StillWantingADog · 04/04/2023 14:17

No but not sure why it matters. Quite a lot of housing stock are like this. Built in 60s most likely.

@Theraffarian I love how many have said it's a lovely looking house whereas you think it's unattractive (and me too to be honest). I guess we all have a different taste :)

This is an ex-council house. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/132157559#/?channel=RES_BUY

JackGrealishsLegs · 04/04/2023 17:18

I live down the road from this house and recognised it from the first photo! It’s not on an estate, it’s in a row of houses on a wide residential 30 limit road. Definitely not ex council - if you look on Rightmove you can see that all the houses in the terrace (“Hazlemere”) have been sold previously, apart from number 7, which may have last sold before 1995 when the online records begin. If it was originally council owned I’d expect a few to still be.

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 04/04/2023 17:36

Looks like the council houses in the area I'm in.

LuluBlakey1 · 04/04/2023 17:44

I grew up in a council house that looked exactly like this from the outside- without the loft room. Inside the dining room was much bigger and the stairs were enclosed.

ASixPackAndTheRadio · 04/04/2023 17:46

People are weirdly defensive on here. You’re allowed to have a preference of what house you buy or don’t buy or to want a house that you think looks nice.

woldsma · 04/04/2023 18:04

It could well be ex council. My first house was ex council (1960s built) and was on the edge of a lovely village.

When we came to sell, it was snapped up very quickly. Best house I've ever owned in terms of nice square rooms, balance of room sizes, built in cupboards etc...

I miss that house!

Pic of an ex council house on that estate attached. Not mine, but one close by!

Seems ex council houses look nicer in other parts of the U.K. than round here. Here they look like this.

TizerorFizz · 04/04/2023 18:49

There’s no evidence on the history of housing in the area that it was council built.

It’s a perfectly good example of s row F houses built by a developer. The open staircase would be unusual in a council house. The others posted are far more to Parker morris standards.
