Is this an ex-council house?

I don't know how to identify them? Just came across it on RM, within budget (expensive!), I dislike the look of it outside but it's gorgeous inside, very spacious, newly refurbished, a lot of light. Am I just being a snob or is this not a desirable looking house? I am not from the UK and am quite set on a Victorian terraced with bay-windows as my "dream home" (first time buyer), however I came across a few of these and they seem much more beautiful inside.

Is this an ex-council house?

No, doesn’t look like one.

I used to be like you when I was younger but now I like a 60s house. Currently living in a Victorian terrace and it’s pokey.

DogLover20 · 03/04/2023 11:30

@Bodgejobvendors thanks! do you know what "type" of house this is?

Unlikely to be. It’s a 1960s or 1970s house I think .

CattySam · 03/04/2023 11:32

Nothing wrong with living in ex council house. They’re usually big and well made.

Sweetchillidumplings · 03/04/2023 11:33

Why does it matter?

QuintanaRoo · 03/04/2023 11:33

Does not look like an ex council house at all. Agree it just looks like a 60s or 70s (probably 70s) house. It looks fine.

Lcb123 · 03/04/2023 11:33

Probably not. And there's nothing wrong with an ex-council. We have an ex-council flat and it's got very big rooms and loads of built in storage. I'd never buy a period property, so many problems!

Lcb123 · 03/04/2023 11:34

And that house is lovely. Sorry, you are being a snob

HydrangeaHo · 03/04/2023 11:34

Lots of council houses were built in the late 50s eatly 60s. Extremely well built, good size rooms, decent gardens and well maintained at least until sold.

TheNinthLock · 03/04/2023 11:34

Not ex- council house. Likely to be early 70s.

Usually lovely, open and light inside.

DogLover20 · 03/04/2023 11:35

@Lcb123 Thank you - yes I probably am! As I said, I am not from the UK so not used to this type of architecture. These type of houses usually seem to be in less desirable streets and always have a sad and shabby look, which is why I associate them with something negative I guess?
That said, the inside is way more gorgeous than most period houses I have seen.

Lots of different types of housing is council where I live. Anything from terraced, new build to estates. I wouldnt care tbh. House looks lovely x

HappyHamsters · 03/04/2023 11:36

Would it matter if it was ex council, can you post the RM link to show the inside. What else is available in that area. It looks fine.

Yes the traditional estate ones are excellent family homes. Storage, decent bedrooms, dining area or room. Built with families in mind.

That’s a lovely house.

Wintersgirl · 03/04/2023 11:43

No, the ex council houses tend to be brown or red brick, not all the time I admit, but your's doesn't look like ex council to me.

Dogsitterwoes · 03/04/2023 11:45

It might be (I've known similar council built ones), it might not be.

You are just being snobby. Older council houses are fab family homes, often better than privately built ones.

Council housing is not a 'negative'.

APlagueOnBothYourTrousers · 03/04/2023 11:48

Our house is 400 years old and it has plenty of negatives as well as loads of positives. If we'd seen an ex-council house in budget & area when we were looking, I'd have definitely given it lots of consideration. As PP have said, they are usually well built, big light rooms, large gardens front and back, loads of storage, driveway, garage. At least in our area.

The thing about the UK is that you'll often get a mix of housing stock on the same street, a mix of people, and a mix of incomes. There are good and bad houses & neighbours everywhere, and it's not down to the money in their pockets. I love living in a diverse area myself.

That house is so nice, OP, go and have a look! (And let us know lol)

FiveShelties · 03/04/2023 11:48

It does not look like a council house to me. But even if it is, that is one lovely house - someone has done an excellent renovation on that.

biedrona · 03/04/2023 11:48

This house is sold!

Theraffarian · 03/04/2023 11:49

Bless it , that is an unattractive little house but doesn’t look ex council at all . Around here ex council houses are oddly more attractive than that in the main , red brick , large front gardens and prettier windows .

DogLover20 · 03/04/2023 11:51

@biedrona yes it is. We are researching houses and the areas and I have seen a few similar ones come up lately so I just wanted to understand whether it's a viable option really, not specifically targeting this one!

OP posts:
Theraffarian · 03/04/2023 11:51

Although someone obviously loved it as it’s sold STC anyway .

DogLover20 · 03/04/2023 11:52

@Theraffarian I love how many have said it's a lovely looking house whereas you think it's unattractive (and me too to be honest). I guess we all have a different taste :)
