Permitted development and conservatories

Hi everyone,

For reasons which are too convoluted (and boring!) to explain here, DM wants to add a conservatory to the side of the house. The complication is that we've already added an extension (with planning permission) to the rear of the house.

Going through planning permission was a saga, and everyone would rather avoid having to do that again if possible.

My question is - would a conservatory need planning permission if we already have an extension to the back? Everything I've read seems to suggest that we can put a conservatory to the side without needing planning (providing we stay within certain size etc).

We haven't gone over 50% of the outside space, and we'd still have plenty left over to stay within this limit even after the conservatory is built.

So does anyone know - does a rear extension count as something completely different to a side extension? Can DM put a side conservatory on without needing planning permission even though she's extended to the rear?

I would ring our planning department but it's almost impossible to get through on the phone, and the last email enquiry took 7 weeks to get an answer. They're absolutely swamped.

Thank you!

I’m really just placemarking/giving you a bump. I don’t think you’ve lost your permitted development rights if the conservatory is coming off the original part of the house rather than the extension but I could be wrong. I’m hoping to do a side extension under PD in a few years having already extended out back but I haven’t looked in to it in great detail.
