Losing my mind over renovations

I am so so fed up. We moved into our new house a few months ago. Has way more problems than we thought. I didn’t want to buy it in the first place but DH convinced me, and it was the only house we could get an offer accepted. It’s a 3 hour drive from where we used to live. In a ‘naicer’ area but I miss my friends so badly and really not sure it was the right decision.

Pretty much since we moved in we’ve been having work done/ doing DIY. For this reason my 3 year old has had to sleep in our bed (basically on top of me) the last few months because her bedroom has been out of action. Older DD’s room now out of action. Playroom also out of action. There is crap everywhere. Mountains of laundry I have nowhere to put. I have no utility room now (did in old house) and so laundry is just all over living room. We are getting carpets installed next week so after that we should be able to start putting things back where they belong (including hopefully children sleeping in their own beds instead of on top of me).

Just needed to vent. Sorry. The mess and constantly having other people in my house is really getting me down.

Aaargh. Sending love. It sounds like you’re near the end if carpets are getting put in and it’s amazing how quickly all of the hell is forgotten after that and you can focus on making it feel like home.

Thanks @dreamersdown . I know it should improve once the carpets are in.. at least upstairs will be pretty much done. We have a lot of work to do downstairs too but we’re pretty much out of money now so will have to wait a while! The mess is really, really getting me down. Plus having others in the house constantly. I have been really I’ll a few times the last few weeks (d&v bug and covid) and hate feeling judged for needing to be in bed! Also just don’t want anyone around when I feel so gross. Anyway as you say.. hopefully the end is now in sight.

Sympathies. We bought this house in 2020, moved in and have had builders in pretty much ever since, apart from the periods of several months when they walked off the job.

@DivineAffliction oh God I don’t know what’s worse! I feel like actually crying about the laundry which seems quite unhinged.. speaking of hinges, at least I have a door on the bathroom now.

Is there a way you could schedule the work yet to come to complete some rooms rather than working on so many at once? I know it is often less efficient for the work, but it really helps with the disruption, and the sheer mental weariness. It's taken 3 years to get our bedroom (nearly all) done, as it wasn't a priority compared to more structural things, but it was really getting me down, and it feels like a breath of fresh air going in there now- a refuge from other part-done rooms.

You’re not alone and it’s not mad to cry about laundry! I cried because a tradesperson cut one of my floorboards really badly ruining the look of my hall floor and causing a hole until we could fix it. We’re not even living in the house yet!!

I hope it improves for you soon ❤️
