Help2Buy bonus mess

FinalHurdle2 · 21/03/2023 12:25

I’ve just sent through my request for my 25% bonus for the help2buy ISA i have been saving into diligently for my first house.

I’ve just found out that i opened another one a long time ago, which i completely forgot about. That one had a balance of a whole £0.05p.
I therefore cannot claim my bonus, which i have factored into the sale.

Do they ever make exceptions?

I’m gutted :(

You need to get your conveyancing solicitor to sort it out. Other than that I have no idea, sorry. Is it possible to do an ISA transfer of both ISAs into one account?

Sunshinegurl · 21/03/2023 23:44

Bumping it for you. Hope you can get it sorted

Why should the solicitors deal
With this.
You ask the banks.

Because the solicitor has to request the funds for this type of ISA bonus.

SphincterSaysWhat · 22/03/2023 00:35

I am aware.
But the buyer send the sol their signed declaration and closing statement and the sol sends that in via email to the provider, you get the capital and sol get the bonus for completion.

There is absolutely no way that it's the solicitor's job to sort this mess out. Unless you want to pay them by the hour to do something the buyer should be doing...

If you don’t get any joy on MN (might be a bit specialist) you could try the moneysavingexpert forums, there’s some really knowledgeable posters on there.

Am afraid to say I'm not sure there is much you can do :(

Gov rules state:

5.4 Multiple Help to Buy: ISAs
(A) If a Non-compliant Eligible Customer, in breach of clause 5.3(A) (Restrictions on opening a Help to Buy: ISA), holds more than one Help to Buy: ISA at any time, the Help to Buy: ISA with the earliest Account Opening Date will be the only valid Help to Buy: ISA.

Thank you all so much for the supportive posts. I do appreciate it. I’ll ask the banks but not holding out much hope at the moment.

@Cottipus, i’ll try the MSN forums. Good shout.

@EstherHazy, I’d just found that info when i
made the post. It should not be possible to
open two H2B accounts or at least there should be some kind of questionnaire/déclaration :(
Maybe I’m clutching at straws. Bah!

Thanks again :)

are they the same type of ISA? We recently had a similar concern, but were told by the bank that you can have more than one ISA in one persons name, as long as they are different types of ISA, you will still get the bonus? We haven't actually tried to claim it yet though so....?

wibblewobbleball · 23/03/2023 11:12

Can't you just close the one that has 0.5p in it and request the bonus again?

They’re both exactly the same type of ISA unfortunately :(
