Cost of roof slate vs solar panels

We’ve got to get a large area of flat roof fixed and are going to convert it into a pitch. I read somewhere that slate is now a comparable price to solar panels, could be rubbish but got me thinking: would it be worth getting some of those solar panels that can be used instead of slate/tiles as this would save on getting both? Has anyone done this?
