Quotes for new carpet

I've never had new carpet before. I am very excited!!
We have a number of rooms to carpet as well as 2 staircases, hallway and landing.
We hope to choose hardwearing carpet at a decent price.
How does it work with carpets? Do you get several quotes, or just pick one company and pick your carpet and go with that?
If you get a few quotes, how do you compare like for like?
There are a few independent carpet fitters I've noticed round here. Are they better value than a shop or large company?
Thank you.

I like 80/20 wool / synthetic mix - all the nice feel and non static of wool but much harder wearing than polyester carpets which feel cheap and plasticky to me.

We have Brinton's too - it's very good quality. It is sold in John Lewis, independent and chain carpet stores so you can get multiple quotes for the exact same product.

@SilentHedges

have you ever used those wasp things that kill the carpet moths? It sounds great as a chemical free solution but I'm not sure I like the idea of thousands of invisible wasps.

I know this maybe a bit of an odd question to ask you - but how come I've never heard of it? I've looked alot for moth killer stuff but never come acros this before. How did you find out about it?

Have you used it before?

@ChesapeakeFan I found out about this about 6 months ago when researching carpet, wool vs synthetic. I really didn't want synthetic for environmental reasons. I've never had to use it, but bearing in mind all our houses, whether we like it or not, are full of microscopic bugs, I'd rather microscopic wasps (that are pet friendly) then carpet moth larvae.

Thank so much for all your advice. The pricing is helpful although I know it varies enormously, it is useful to know what the minimum budget might be, in order to understand what we can afford.
Now I just need to stop my dog shedding so much fur!
