Knock down garage or keep?

We’ve recently moved into a semi detached ex council property with a huge garden, garden has a detached garage to the left of the house. The sun moves over the left of the house and the garage blocks all the light from the patio and extension. We have no use for the garage as we moved from a bungalow with no storage so the loft does us perfect plus there’s a huge shed for bbqs etc. my question is would you knock down the garage to gain extra sun? My husband thinks we should keep for if we do sell in future and isn’t bothered about sunlight, it would also open the garden so next door could see if slightly but we really have no plans to move for the next 10/15 years. Annoying as our old house the garden faced the same and the extra sun was lovely in the summer. Would you prefer a pebbledashed garage or sun? Help!

We had exactly the same and finally removed the garage last year.

Sun every time! Dealbreaker for me.

Could the garage be converted to an additional bedroom or other room to add value to the house? Can you find any price differences for houses in your area with/without a garage to compare?

What is the garage made from? We recently removed a a double garage which was falling down- but the roof was asbestos. We had to get a specialist to remove it and pay a fortune for a special skip.

Thanks for your replies! @SwedishEdith did you lose some privacy, do you have any regrets?

@CC4712 its a single garage that just fits one car, made from breeze blocks and covered in pebbledash that’s falling off with every gust of wind! Also has metal roof, it’s a slight eyesore that the previous owner kept their hobby cars in. I don’t think could be converted unfortunately, properties don’t tend to come up in this area as it’s pretty rural area

Sounds really ugly, need to go!

Surely privacy from the neighbours with fence and trellis is possible?

SwedishEdith · 16/03/2023 22:03

We needed to get new fencing. Also a pebble dashed concrete eyesore with an asbestos roof. Just double-bagged that and took to the tip (our council allows that).

Check that the metal roof is isn’t actually an asbestos roof…
