Decorating tips please

I am going to start decorating various rooms in my house. I have painted and wall papered before and it has looked ok but now I want to take my time and do it properly and well.
So I will start with the ceilings? Then is it wood work or walls next? To get a crisp line/finish I have been told to use masking tape but do I paint the walls (with masking tape on the ceiling?) then put masking tape on the walls whilst I do the woodwork or the other way round?
Can someone please give me a 1,2,3 step guide please in the simplest terms.
Thank you!

Personally, I do the ceiling first. Do not overload the roller is my no.1 tip. Then I do all the woodwork because emulsion can be wiped off eggshell gloss easily but not the other way round. So doors/frame/skirting etc. Last I paint the walls or wallpaper. I'm pretty skilled at cutting in now so I wouldn't mask around the door but if two paint colours were meeting in the corner, then I would using painting tape (not masking tape which is useless) on one side to make the line perfect.
