Extension or garden room

Has anyone gone for a garden room instead of extension ? We are just starting out on deciding. If we did extension we would get a study, laundry room and big kitchen / diner. If we go for garden room we could have a laundry and office / games space. We would probably also knock through current kitchen and dining room to make one room. One is much cheaper option. Any pros and cons ? What do I need to think about ? If it makes a difference we will have a teenage son in the next few years (he’s currently 11). Thank you ☺️

The extension is obviously going to add more value than the garden room. The garden room is going to appeal a lot to your son in years to come. It depends what you want to spend/value most I guess?

I would 100% go for the extension. Made to last. Much better value for your house.

Are you sure that the garden room would actually be considerably cheaper? A few neighbours have had garden rooms and by the time the lighting, plumbing, landscaping etc is done, it's not much different in price to having an extension.

Thanks. Our builder has said it’s much cheaper to go down garden room route which is why I’m thinking about doing that.
