I need a new front door. I don't want a plastic one, I want a wooden one. Do I hire a carpenter? Or someone else? Do I purchase the door myself?!

It's the sort of job a local handyman would do. Ring a couple, ask if they'll fit a wooden front door. They'll be able to advise you what needs to be bought.

What kind of wooden door? Something off the shelf or fancier? Does your door have any surround that would also need replacing. We asked for quotes from local joiners for what we were after and the quotes were very, very high.

@DogInATent thank you. I know a handyman I could ask!

@SwedishEdith is a joiner the same as a carpenter? Sorry if that's a stupid question. I've looked online for doors and found some solid ones which I like the look of. The frame seems ok so think it is just the door that I need replacing

I think the terms are used interchangeably a bit now but I think a joiner is more skilled?

Joiners work in a workshop, carpenters work on-site.
(very crude rule-of-thumb)

We've got joiners working on site at the moment?

I believe they can be let outside to play if they behave and play nicely with the other trades,

(I did say it was only a very crude rule of thumb)
