Replacing flooring and redecorating whole house while living in it

This may sound odd but I’ve never lived anywhere long enough for this to be an issue. After living here for over 10 years we still have the original developer’s carpet, vinyl and paint, and it all needs to go.

I’ve done enough reading to know that flooring needs to be done first. But should we move all our stuff out and put it in storage? Or do you shuffle things from room to room and ask flooring people to do the work in stages?

I assume it would be cheaper to get everything painted / carpeted in one go rather than room by room.

I shuffle things from room to room although it is a pain. I left big furniture like sofas downstairs and the flooring people were kind enough to move it in to another room they had floored so they could do the rest of the house. If you are painting I would do that before the flooring goes down.

Flooring needs to be done after the decorating is done , carpets are the last thing to go down in the room.

Hi @Seainasive room by room is absolutely fine. Flooring is definitely the last thing to do.

Decorate first then flooring, to get a good deal on flooring you might need to order it all together but they might be able to put it down in stages, move things from room to room.

So interesting- the unanimous position is flooring last! The flooring websites say last as the installation might damage the paint work, but perhaps that is simply self interest?

Room by room looks like the way to go. Chaos for longer but slightly less daunting.

thanks!
