Gloss on emulsion on wood? 🤔

I picked up a bedside cabinet on Facebook marketplace for £10. It’s a cheap piece of furniture, probably only cost a few quid new, and it’s since been painted with grey matt paint (no idea what sort, but certainly not the kind designed for wood). It is dull and ugly and stained.

I can’t be bothered stripping the paint off it, but can I paint over it with gloss? Would it stick? It isn’t a nice enough piece to put effort into, it’s never going to look gorgeous but if a quick, cheap and easy improvement is possible, I will give it a go! Any ideas and advice welcome, thanks.

For a quickie (half) bodge job, give it a wipe over with Flash cleaner or similar to remove grease etc, then paint away. The new paint won't last perfectly but then it doesn't sounds like it matters that much. People say you need to sand but you don't. I just painted my bed & slapped it on, it was fine. And years ago I painted the kitchen larder with emulsion and that lasted ages. Go for it & enjoy yourself.

I’d give it a coat of primer first and then whatever you want to be the final finish. CBA with sanding etc!
