Stuck swivel plug woes

Any ideas how I loosen (or remove) a stuck swivel plug?

It's stuck closed (with some water in the sink altho I've removed what I can). I've tried to hammer it at various points around the edge (I don't know where the pivot is) but think I've just hammered it in harder.

In case it wasn't obvious, DIY is not my forté.

Boiling water? Worth a try

No joy with boiling water. I expected that tho, as surely all the metal expands so there's no change in the fit.

Could u take the waste trap off and try and push it from underneath

Yarnosaura · 26/02/2023 15:21

Empty all the water and dry it. Spray WD40, just a little, to hopefully work itself into the gap and loosen the seal.

This happened to me in a premier inn after getting sand in the sink. Banging it and hot water didn't make a difference.

This has just happened in our sink. Does anyone have any wise tips?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 05/06/2023 15:46

I paid someone to remove it and put a new one in

Thanks!

I have tried spraying with silcone and trying to shift it that way. It’s not worked.

Put a rubber glove on and go round and round the plug in a circular motion. It worked for me. It was a tip on You Tube!

I will try the glove tip. This is what it looks like - wedged with one side slightly sticking up.

I used one of those vacuum sucker things for taking spotlights out. Worked a treat.

Omg! Found this thread after Mum has just done the exact same thing in a Premier Inn sink! She was cursing the plug for being stupid rather than herself! 😂😂😂

Swivel plug in basin got stuck after using Bar Keepers Friend (a gritty type cleaner). Husband took a hammer and small screw driver to it, and after much cursing managed to free it. But will this happen again, if so I think the best solution would be to replace it.

nickmackin · 22/02/2026 21:21

I had the same problem. I mopped the water out, put in some WD-40, then took a hammer and a fine wood chisel to it. A couple of gentle taps and it started to move a little, then a few more and I was free!
