British Standard kitchens

I'm considering BS for a small 'i' shaped kitchen but I'd be interested in hearing options from anyone whose fitted them - they do t seem to offer some of the services other companies do such as design, fitting, and mainly painting.

Did you find there were enough cupboard options to choose from?

I've recently bought British Standard cupboards as I loved the Plain English design but couldn't afford them. I also preferred BSC to Devol which I found too heavy/chunky.

BSC do drawings based on your measurements but I didn't need much design as I knew what I wanted to go where. They drew side panels around the fridge which there wasn't enough space for and even if there had been they weren't needed. I didn't buy their worktops or knobs which I sourced better and cheaper elsewhere. They don't have anything fancy like shelves which pull out of corner cupboards but their range was plenty for me

I had a local carpenter fit and match the design with some extra cupboards to go up to the ceiling to box in our solar expansion tanks and boiler pipework.

Painting them has been incredibly time consuming because I've used oil based eggshell and very hard to get an even and smooth finish.

Absolutely gorgeous cupboards though

Thank you that's really helpful. I assume you are painting them yourself? What do you think of the build quality? And what have you done in the corners? ( assuming you have any)

Sorry I meant to ask what the lead time was like also

Hi, we have had one for about 5 years. It comes fully assembled although you have to collect it/get it couriered yourself. Husband fitted and painted it- and I absolutely love it. Amazing quality. Lead time around 8 weeks I think.

calyppso · 04/03/2023 22:52

Yes I'm painting it myself - cupboards were soooo expensive! It comes undercoated and so good surface to work on. Another time I'd use water based paint though.

Collected it from Suffolk as their courier charge was ridiculous

I have the small corner cupboard in one corner. On the other corner there's a double cupboard sticking out into the room at right angles to the wall where there's a drawer unit. To avoid empty space we cut a hole in the side of the double cupboard and put in a shelf under the worktop for a jam jar stash

applespearsbears · 05/03/2023 09:50

@calyppso @Sonrien thank you both that's really helpful. Do either of you have the Stowupland? Am I right in thinking there's no frame on the door just the routed detail?

Yes that’s right. No frame. There London shop is worth a visit if you can get there!

Where did you source your knobs please?

calyppso · 11/03/2023 16:08

@alwayscheery Pushka Home. More modern than the British Standard ones. I found it very hard to source cupboard knobs with matching handles which weren't cup handles. Armac Martin do beautiful ones but eye-wateringly expensive

Thank you.
I love Armac Martin but found some similar from Hafale.
