Hello,

We now have a 1930s house after yrs in older properties. We have always had shutters but can't afford them at the moment.

Should we go with blinds or curtains & what style/size?

The house has bay windows & radiators under the windows.

Shutters with a bay window would look a bit odd. I have lightproof blinds on south-facing windows and curtains inside them. Otherwise curtains or Roman blinds. Style is up to you, size depends on window size.

I'm not sure why shutters would look odd with a bay window, it's quite normal to see.

op if go for blinds, curtains I find quite dated and blinds can be cost effective and very lovely, in silks, velvets etc.

Do people use external shutters like curtains & blinds then? I assume you need to go outside or open windows to close or open the shutters

Most external shutters I've ever used (France/Germany/Switzerland) comprise thin horizontal wooden slats and there is a small handle to roll them down from the inside. They are designed to keep the heat in or out (depending on the time of year).

The ones on Swiss ski chalets tend to be more for decoration or security when a property is shut up off season.

Roman blinds could work well for a clean and stylish look, especially if you want to control light without heavy fabrics. If you're leaning towards curtains, going for floor-length ones can make a room feel taller and more elegant.
