I live in Plymouth which is a 30 minute drive across the moors from Tavistock, and the closest city for main attractions, services, eating out, entertainment etc. Tavistock is a small market town, close to the moors so good for walking, there is Drake's Trail for cycling along with the moors. Not a lot of hosuing available to buy or rent, at high prices. It has a nice town centre, with nice cafes and independent shops, tesco, morrisons, Aldi slightly out of town, small hospital for minor injuries. On the community front I would say its quite 'closed' with established locals who don't appreciate incomers but that is pretty common for a lot of small towns in the SW as housing for locals is such an issue.

I live in North Devon which is about a good 45 - 1 hour drive from Tavi - although I have been there for work.
Very quiet area. Market town but close to Plymouth. There isn’t really much there.

Tavistock is a bit boring, many use it as a commuter town to Plymouth. Is a pain to get to Tavistock i've always found. Some drink problems and anti social behavior but overall a decent place, although admittely I only lived there for 7 months

I know Tavistock well as I live in West Devon. It's a nice market town but a little cut off, pain to get to Plymouth and no railway line. Nice shops, lots of independent ones and good cafes and pubs.
Okehampton is another option, smaller town centre, right on the moor, granite way, lots of housing being built, plus the railway line has been reinstated to Exeter.
