Folkestone tell me all

Hello , I would like finally to relocate to Folkestone ( despite some negative comments about the town) . Saw a 2bed house in Church Road and keen to make an offer ..Seen some east parts , but not so impressed with it.. Would like to know how the area looks like around Church Road ( liked walking down to the beach into Sandgate- only 15-20mind down the hill) . As being a single lady commuting 4 days into London .. no driving, but happy to walk to the train station.. My worry is coming in the winter home in late evenings .. Your help would be very much appreciated !

Hi. I’m thinking of doing the same! Just seen your posts about this. I’m viewing properties down there. Despite some online reports, I think it’s worth remembering that many people often live in an area that gets criticism, and don’t always have problems. I’ve fancied Folkestone for quite a while. Hoping to find the right little place with a garden!

I do not know it myself but my friend who is a single lady in her 50s moved there a few years ago and she absolutely loves it so much so she is hoping to buy down there eventually

she has never had any issues and she is right near the town

That’s very good to know!

Best thing we’ve ever done! Happy to help if you want to PM any specific questions. Don’t really know Church Road, but Cheriton itself seems alright.

I moved to Sandgate a couple of years ago, and it’s the best thing I ever did. Parts of Folkestone aren’t great (like any town), but Cheriton is fine. Good high street and great rail link to London. Folkestone West to St Pancras is just under an hour. Sandgate is lovely - as a single woman of more years than I’d like, I feel very happy and safe here. If you’d like any more info, please feel free to message me.

I grew up there and lived there for 22 years, now only visit family but it seems fairly similar. The artistic quarter by the harbour is really nice now to visit(not to live). Stay to the west of the town, Cheriton was very close to my home (we lived on shorncliffe road but Cheriton end). Hythe is lovely and there’s buses but I run from Hythe to sandgate and back when we visit in laws. There’s rough areas but it’s a big town so totally normal. Canterbury can be reached by bus too and that’s a nice city. Happy to answer specific questions if you want to dm me.

I should caveat this with we moved to the West Country and I do prefer it here but if you work in London Folkestone is a good option.

Church road in cheriton? It’s a nice area, within easy walking distance of cheriton high street, the station, the beach, Tesco. I lived round there and liked it.

Love Folkestone. There are a lot of drunks around the station area, but my experience is that they only bother each other / do vandalism and other antisocial behaviour.

That said I would never move there if I was commuting to London 4x a week. That’s a seriously expensive and long commute!

Church Road Cheriton is quite a walk to the station @driedgrassinavase

I live in Folkestone and have to say I feel pretty safe. Have managed to leave my door ajar twice while taking my son to scouts so open for a couple of hours and nothing happened despite purse being just inside (this was on East side). There is a reasonable amount going on in the evenings, choirs, groups you could join. church road is a good location, in West side but not too much noise from M20. Its quite a walk from town though, if you don't cycle. Good luck with the move.

It’s about 15 minutes to walk to folkestone west

GerundTheBehemoth · 07/04/2023 09:32

I moved to Sandgate the year before last (I'm another single one!) and I love it. Have made plenty of pals and am often out in Folkestone - gigs, choir, climbing wall, cinema, sea swimming, walks etc.

Hey. Did you make the move and how are you finding it? We’re making a move in new year. Couple with a toddler and a dog. We like Cheriton and people seem to say it’s nice. Good schools. High street etc. does it have good dog walking parks or walks near there? Also is there any area that is closer to the east that you’d advise/nice to live, nice schools, community etc. I’m sooo excited as we love Folkestone but visiting and living is so different. So we really don’t want to mess it up. Thank you to all in advance xx
