Washing machine help!

purpleme12 · 19/02/2023 22:12

Didn't know where to put this.
Washing machine was really really really loud and making a really really weird noise .
Like it was going to take off!
It was a bit scary.
Does this mean it's kaput?! Am I ok to use it again or should I not?! Does this mean I need to go out and get another one?

I don’t think anyone can answer really. It may be worth asking a local repair man how much they’d charge to have a look at it before rushing to get a new one but, it depends how old your machine is, & if you think it’s actually worth repairing or just replacing.

We had to have a new one in December but ours was around 10 years old.

I don't know if it's worth repairing or replacing.
If I get a new one I'd probably have a look at ones from charity shops.
It might be 10 years old. It's definitely 5 years old.

I'd post a video but it won't let me.
I don't know whether I should be using it?

Was the washing load balanced in it. Mine sounds awful if I only wash a couple of towels instead of a full load.

Is the machine itself balanced on its feet or can you wobble it slightly?

Otherwise 8t could be the brushes wearing out. They are cheap and easy to replace but repairmen find them annoying to do. How old is your machine?

MoreThanRubies · 19/02/2023 22:54

Mine got louder and louder until one day it leaked all over the floor with gritty dust in the water. The concrete block had broken and fallen out of the bottom, which pulled the drum down somehow. Had to replace it. So…if it’s just loud at the moment (no dust), maybe get an engineer out? Either way, if you use it again, keep an eye out for leaks (and keep some old towels handy).

Jellybean23 · 19/02/2023 22:56

They do make alarming noises if the load isn't balanced at the start of spinning. The machine usually sorts itself out. What was in the drum at the time?

purpleme12 · 19/02/2023 22:58

Just normal loads I've done loads of times before.
It's at least 5 years old. Could be as old as 10 years I can't remember to be honest.
I would probably be looking at charity shops anyway if I get a new one.
I don't think I could put a new one in myself ☹️

Try another smaller load as the last one could have been unbalanced., but can you wobble it if you lean on one corner?

You can always contact a repairman for a quote but weigh that up against a new one ie £100 repair vs £150 for new. Places like currys and ao.com offer reconnection for a fee. Have a Google and see whats out there if the noise persists.

purpleme12 · 19/02/2023 23:21

Do you think I'm ok to use it still then?
As my dad said not to as it might be a fair risk?

Cheapest one on AO is £200 enough is out of stock 😭
I hate being by myself

I'm wouldn't use it.

Possibly bearings are on the way out
have a look on YouTube there might be a video that shows you one running with noisy bearings
ours went it sounded like a plane taking off when spinning

when they do go all together the brim might suddenly stop spinning ours did
hell of a noise but it just snapped the belt

also look on Facebook marketplace

AllWorkYoPlait · 20/02/2023 05:29

What sort of noise? Banging as in the machine itself is moving (I get this occassionally if unbalanced load - usually towels). Or mechanical noise?

Maybe your dad could try and help you fix it or identify the problem rather than just tell you it might be a fire risk...

You might find a freebie/cheapie on FB, gumtree or freecycle.

LovelyDaaling · 20/02/2023 07:12

Can you call a local repair man and describe the problem over the phone. He will probably have a fair idea of what's wrong and be able to advise you whether it's worth repairing or not. Mine told me some brands are just not worth repairing.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 20/02/2023 10:03

Ours starting shaking and making a banging noise and it turned out to be a broken spring that supported one of the concrete blocks. The spring was replaced and it went on for many more years.

Jellycakes12 · 03/03/2023 10:15

Same issue with ours it’s the bearings and needs a new drum told not worth repairing as 450 for repair! I’m still using it as I’m desperate

I didn't know whether to use it or not, if it was a fire risk? So I got rid of it in the end.

Need to order a new one as washing piling up!
