Just had a quote back for supply & fitting a wooden side gate 6 x 3ft plus a side panel. Bog standard unpainted tongue & groove
£650 Was expecting more like £400.
Am I being tight? I'm in the north btw.

it would be a lot cheaper to order a gate (wickes, B&Q?) have it delivered then get a local handy man to fit.

Can you get another quote to compare? The gate might be custom made if it’s not a standard size so buying one from a DIY store might not be an option. If the gate needs new posts and the fence panel needs base soared etc then I can see it costing that much, could be a few hours work.

I'd say so I'm having 53ft of fencing (5ft high) with a gate fitted next week (including removal of old fence) for £1119.

Is there a reason you can’t buy off the peg from a big DIY barn, as PP suggests?

FWIW, I had a large, single hardwood side gate made and fitted, pre covid (bespoke width and 7.5ft tall) and that was £1800 all in. It’s really good quality and heavy, perfect for our needs so we were happy to pay the price. Anything made to measure/bespoke by craftspeople will be more expensive. Plus, post covid, prices have gone up, so I’d expect to pay over £2k for the same thing now.

That’s an absolute bargain!

I had a quote for the same work a couple of weeks ago: £1100 😱

MissAtomicBomb1 · 19/02/2023 14:44

@Spotsstripes that's an amazing price!
The gate itself is a standard size so I could get it off the peg. They are about £150 at b&q. I'm pretty sure that the fencer will be picking one up from a supplier not making a bespoke one. What complicates it slightly is that there are two small side panels that also need replacing which is why we're not doing it ourselves. I wouldn't think it's more than 1/2 days work though.
Getting another quote tomorrow to compare.

I paid not far off that (£600 I think it was) for exactly the same about 5 years ago - I'm in London though.

Mine was a 2 man job I remember though, plus there was quite a bit of tinkering as it needed to swing past an external chimney breast to open.

PortiaPorcupine · 19/02/2023 16:59

Sounds expensive to me. DP is a carpenter and he did a very similar job yesterday. Gate custom built due to dimensions, also removed old one. £300 labour and materials. We're in South Wales or I'd send him up OP 😆

Rodneyisaplonker · 19/02/2023 17:03

I think if it’s also replacing two side panels it’s prob quite reasonable .

Also up north (rural Lancashire).
We had a softwood (pressure treated) t&g gate made & fitted just over a year ago for £220 - slightly smaller than yours & no side panels, which I suppose could be fiddly.
If yours is hardwood it would be more but it sounds like a lot otherwise!
