Loft conversion - velux advice

boymum1989 · 19/02/2023 10:17

We are starting our loft conversion in March and husband and I are at loggerheads over having a skylight/velux over the stairwell.

It’s a non-negotiable for me because I want to have as much light as possible and definitely a must-have if we sell. He’s a builder and adamant they always cause issues and are a pain to maintain if they leak as they’re over the stairs.

Wondering if anyone has any insights on
a) has one and it’s a pain/leaks
b) didn’t put one in and regret the lack of light.

TIA x

I would say if you are selling then don’t have one. If they do leak, then that would be just another thing the potential buyers surveyor would be looking for.
How about a nice chandelier?

I've got 20 year old velux windows, 5 in total. Non leak !

Go for it had one for years never leaked
tell him they don’t leak if there put in properly
if it did leak it would be repaired from outside anyway

great for light also heat rises in last year’s hot spell opened it You can buy long pole
cools house down

Ours never leak ...we have five
Had the wooden framed ones originally but after a house revamp we swapped for the UPVC ones
These are easier to clean

Same. Just replaced two non-leaking 30+ year old Velux windows as I wanted triple rather than original single glazed.

We have one over our loft stairwell and it's never leaked. Makes a big difference lighter else it would be quite a gloomy corner!

I've had mine in now for 25yrs. Velux are very well made. Installed properly they never leak. The double glazed seal in mine are still perfect too!

We have several in an extension and love the light. Builder said Velux were expensive but due to design, have several lines of defence against leaking. 5 years on, still ok. However, you do need to be able to get up to it to clean the glass inside. Outside ours is reached using a long pole but if you can't, you need to reach up to clean that as well as birds do mess on them
